Wine.

Possible moon on a stick requirement here but.....

I've been through most of the range of Shiraz in our local supermarket and I've gotten a little bored with em. Tried a few Pinot noir but not exactly overjoyed with them.

Can anyone recommend something not Shiraz or Pinot noir, from supermarkets and under a tenner?

Pinotage is nice, along the same lines but slightly different

Malbec from Argentina
Co-op do a reserva bottle for £8 - it's lovely

Try Nero d'Avola from Sicily. It's usually better when it's 100% grape variety and not blended with other grapes.

Gran Sangre de Toro - Torres from Catalunya

There are some fab south west France wines for low low price. Most of which are blends of grenache/syrah

Look round for a Rioja reserva

Mucho gusto!

Also, Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile / Argentina is good

Can I suggest trying to buy a wine for what it is rather than by varietal?

Its rather like buying milk by the breed of cow....

You'll also miss out on a lot of great wine that doesnt get flaunted much in this country if you dont pigeon hole yourself. For example much of the Loire reds made with Cabernet France - when was the last time anyone went into weatherspoons and ordered a large glass of Cabernet Franc? 😉

Sometimes you can get a Barollo for around a tenner..and well worth it.

Theres a whole heap of Italian red wine to be discovered - they have far more grape varieties than anyone else.

Pinot does need to be good, to be enjoyable, some of the cheaper pinots tend to be a bit thin and bitter, without having sufficinet body to develop and carry the full flavour.

If you like your wines a bit heavier, then try a Chilean Carmeneré ? for about £5-8 you can begin to get something fairly acceptable. (If thats what you deem a price point thats acceptable?)

try a nice 'cotes du rhone' different, but it's nice to expand your horizons perhaps with a little brie 🙂

go a bit higher and get a Barolo, especially nice with food

Sainsburys
or
Tesco.....and a few quid cheaper

Pretty sure someone (probably my father in law) will come along and tell me that you can't get a good one for less than 30 notes, but to be honest, unless you know your stuff or are the guy from Sideways, will you really care after one glass?

Edit:

try a nice 'cotes du rhone'

This is splendid and on offer
