Does anyone use a rectangular bag over a mummy shape? i find my mummy bag pretty constrainng, and end up tossing and turning. I always pressumed the rectangular ones were just for cheap bags, but perhaps not?
can you get midrange/nice/effective sleeping bags with a bit more room to spread out? obviously a bit bigger to pack down, but just a thought, to get a better nights sleep out and about
Look for "quilt sleeping bags".
Seem fine for car-camping use but look too bulky if you're having to pack/carry them etc.
Coleman Cozyfoot sleeping bags ftw , got a fleecy toe box bit , its rectanglular shaped, which I find is a bit more breathable but still has a hood, you can join them together to make a double too.
its not a small bikepacking one tho!
I find a rectangle sleeping bag much better than a mummy bag, think I must dream I'm a marathon runner in my sleep as my legs always get tangled up through the night. Yes, bit more bulky but I find it worth it for better sleep
A lot can depend on the width of a mummy bag. I have two, a summer and winter. And one is cut wider around the knees which although generally similar in size overall feels much much roomier and less constricting
Deuter Exosphere sleeping bags are mummy shaped but have elasticity built into them and they're a lot more comfortable than normal sleeping bags I've found.
A Big Agnes side sleeper bag has just arrived here. Almost fell asleep on the floor when trying it out.
There are a few models with differing temps on Sport Pursuit. Worth considering if you're a side sleeper.

Very much depends on the bag, I've a Vango 3 season synthetic which is very snug, and I actually had to send one of the Alpkit bags back because it was just too constrictive. The more technical bags tend to be tight, it helps prevent draughts and also using the least material possible is one of the ways to lower weight. On the other hand, I've a Rab Ascent 700 bag which positively spacious. Which reminds me, I must get it listed on the classifieds!

Yes. My Sierra Designs Zissou 35 is exactly this. It is wider in cut, both chest and feet, it has an roll top 'quilt' like closure and a 'foot escape hole'. I have slept far, far better in this than any other bag I have had over the years - and most of it is because I can actually move in it and not feel like I am trussed up all night.
A swift google suggests that model is no longer available, but you can get similar.
As above - depends on the overall size of the mummy bag. For a price, UK maker PHD designs will sell you a bag in various lengths and widths.
Currently a sale on. £471 for a Minim 350 in the long wide size which fits me well at 6ft3 17 stone.
Quotes it as good for -2C but I think that is conservative.
If it's for car camping in summer or using in hostels then the Pod sleeping bags they sell at Go Outdoors give more room. Our kids had the kids versions when they were younger and they were fine.
If you need to carry it or sleep somewhere colder then you will need to compromise somewhere.
Other option for car camping is to put a fitted sheet over your sleeping mat and take a duvet. More or less like sleeping at home.

Zipperless design with a ‘blanket’ section desgned for side sleepers.

Alpkit sell a down rectangular sleeping bag, Cloud 9, that will pack down nice and small.
Really highly rate the UK ex-Army sleep systems. I've got a medium and a light version (put them together when it's super cold). Can be run with the zips fully open (as a blanket) or zipped up and toasty if you need to be.
