Not looking to convert my whole record collection, but do need to convert one or two lps which are not available any longer (in any format).
Having read up some items i already have, turntable, imac (or ipads of different vintages) i've had a griffin imic for a number of years. turntable has no pre-amp, its a rega p3.
Im anticipating i can do the following, plug the rca phono plugs from the turntable to an rca to 3.m jack adapter into the imic (using mic level) then plug the usb into the imac. planning on using garageband for recording and editing the tracks.
im a little concerned about grounding of the turntable as i will have to move it away from the hifi to be closer to imac.
only thin i need to buy is the adapter.
will this work?
I think you will need a phono preamp. Not only will the output from the turntable be too low for a mic input, there is also "RIAA equalization" applied.
Having done a few (sampling, track separation etc), I declared it too much faffage and just downloaded them. Depending on what quality you're after, most stuff can be found on Soulseek or even Piratebay in 320 or flac format.
Ye i get that, but in this instance the LP is not available in any format. its an educational language recording.
i'll get the chance today to give this set up a try.
Is said turntable still attached to a hi-fi? Is there a tape out? If so go from there to the imic line in.
I've no idea what a griffin imic is but you cannot plug the turntable into a mic level input as you require a phono amp. The above suggestion of using the tape out is the best if it's already connected to the hifi.
Not done it for years but griffin imic + technics sl1210s + mac always worked fine for me, I used to re eq and master in logic, I'd probably just upload to Landr to master raw aiffs, great for dance music.
EDIT: btw - you don't need garageband, you can use final vinyl the free griffin imic app. You do realise you have to record in real time 😉
Having read up a little since my original post, the griffin imic is effectively an analogue - digital converter, it is switchable from mic level to line level input with a usb output.
