Listening to a tape of a mate's D&B mix from the early 90s. How can I preserve its unique awesomeness in digital form? A google search suggests it is very complicated for a technophobe like me. Anyone done it successfully?

Don't even need to do that. Buy a 3.5mm cable to plug a cassette player into the microphone socket of your pc/laptop then download Audacity. They have a step by step guide in the online manual on how to transfer something, clean it up, split it into seperate tracks for burning on a cd, etc....

It's a bit of a pain to get used to at first but with a bit of practice you can get them sounding ok though it helps if the tape and player are in good condition. If you search on Soundcloud and Mixcloud for my username (isitafox) you'll find a couple I did from some old rave tapes. Got loads more I want to do when I get the time.
There are all manner of analogue to digital converters available from cheap to very expensive. I have a 4 channel Firewire device which cost a few bob but also a very cheap stereo in USB out - connect the tape output to the stereo ins and the USB to your computer. Use Audacity or something similar to record and then split into tracks if desired.
