Jnr has been taking ski lessons this year and has advised that she would prefer a ski holiday rather than a sun holiday next year.

So....

Relatively close to an airport.

Likely snow in early Feb.

Not too challenging.

Family orientated.

Nice views.

A few places to eat.

Where in Europe?

Now if anyone owns and rents out an apartment in a ski resort just let me know...

Ps - Anyone skied in Slovenia?

Thanks.

St Jean D'Aulps, French Alps. 10 minutes from Morzine but much quieter, perfect for beginners. About an hour from Geneva.

Obergurgl or Hochgurgl. 90 mins from Innsbruck airport, lots of blues and reds, nice places to eat, relatively high and a lot quieter than a lot of French resorts. It’s also quite pretty if that matters. It’ll be perfect.

Cheap and cheerful or s****y and expensive? I’m a fan of Le Grand Bornand as French resorts go. Les Gets also ticks your boxes but not that quiet.

St Jean d'Aulps is a good call for learners. Can take a look abus to Morzine if adventurous but not needed for a first week

Lovely village in Austria, exactly 1hr from Salzburg airport. 150km of pistes of all types. Plenty of nice restaurants and not crazily expensive. No queues at lifts ever.

STW rates can be done!

Courcheval 1850 - not sure about airport though as we drive. Cheaper down the hill but good runs for beginners.

Valmorel, Valfrejus. Neither are huge but lots to get stuck into (you can even take in the Col de la Madeleine from Valmorel) and quite nice atmosphere for "custom built" resorts.

If you’re going in February my advice would be to avoid France. Loads of lovely resorts in Austria which will be more quiet and plenty of options suitable for beginners - I would say there is more choice within 90 minutes of Salzburg or Innsbruck than, say, Geneva.

If it was me I’d be snapping the hands off that Ski Amade apartment offered above....

Sestriere in Italy Good for beginners and intermediates, maybe not so much for real experts, black runs a bit more like harder French reds. A bit cheaper than France for food and drink, nice Italian attitude. We were there at half term a couple of years ago and rarely queued for lifts. Fairly short transfer from Turin as far as I remember.

I have a Newly refurbished 2bed apartment in Morillon (Grand Massif) with some availability early Feb (before French school holidays).

Just over 1hr to Geneva.

Ski in/out straight onto the green nursery slope. And 30m walk to main Sairon chair. Great family resort, tree lined runs are good for not losing children when the weather turns sht 😉

If you want a look at Homeaway property nb 8372390. Then pm me if interested.

I would second this, France, wonderful though it is, is silly busy in February. Italy is better but Austria is the option I'd go for. After many years skiing in France, I'm definitely a convert to Austria.

Whilst I've only been to the snow once so have nothing to compare with, we found Alpe d'huez to be great for beginners, seemed to have loads of green runs and wasn't too expensive, bus from grenoble airport was super easy .

I live 40 minutes drive from Ljubljana airport, just over the border in Austria. I have not done much in Slovenia but my region of Carinthia is great if you want quieter family orientated resorts. A season ticket for the entire region is a reasonable price. Look at Nassfeld for normally great snow.

Kranjska Gora is a very nice and close to Ljubljana, but small in terms of slopes resort. The village is a reasonable size with a load of restaurants and views are amazing.

Does it absolutely have to be Europe? I ask because for the same sort cost, you could go to Mont Tremblant, which is just North of Montreal.

It ticks all the right boxes, and before returning home, you have Montreal itself to visit:

There are some very good flight and accommodation deals available. I can not speak highly enough of it as a possibility.

Going to Avoriaz for the third time next year. Both previous times in February.

Great location (no cars), plenty of slopes for all, high so good snow, plenty to do other than ski too. Not cheap though but Airbnb is an option to save cash

We went to Isola 2000 earlier this year - close to Nice , high and with plenty of beginner runs.

The big advantage of Austria over France is the in resort cost. It’s still around €4 a pint in our area, and a ham & cheese toastie on the pistes is usually from €5 to €8.

Pila

An easy 1.5hours from Turin. Very good beginners intermediate resort. If there is pow, the side country is easy for beginners ride and not get stuck. Most of it is below the tree line which makes it ride able in a whiteout.

How old is Jnr?

February can be freezing cold. Easter is much more kid friendly

Obergugal is known for being particualy cold, not great for kids.

Snowheads have a calender of school holiday dates, depending on when easter falls yu mey be OK in the first week of Feb

Morrillion / Flaine ticks most of boxes . Near GVA airport , get local pass then extend to whole area for a fe days if needed.

Otherwise Austria , loads of smaller resorts to choose from , abit lower generally but still snowy

Italy has loads of choice , not sure about resorts near airports though . I liked sestriere , great easy skiing

Another vote for Levi, Finland. We have snowboarded lots in France, a little in Italy, Andorra, Canada & Colorado and last year our 7 yr old was ready for his first proper ski trip. We were blown away by the place for beginners, absolutely perfect.

We went with Inghams and chose to self cater in a log cabin with sauna and with a well packed bag of dry goods we had a very good value trip inc, 3 x lessons for our boy plus ski hire, left passes, Dog sledding, reindeer farm, ice hotel visit, Spa visit and 3 hrs fat bike hire for under £3500. Not bad for something that felt like a dream trip.

The slopes round at Zero Point are perfect and sunny and by day 3 he was ripping through the snow park and snow ploughing through the bombed out trees. Left his daft old dad way behind 🙂

We didn't eat out at all or even go boozing, just enjoyed the trips and perfect snow and our lovely little cabin.
