We don't want to go to Cornwall - nightmare drive

We have stayed near Lyme Regis & Charmouth (Monkton Wylde caravan site) and like it there with day trips to Weymouth and beyond, but fancy somewhere different.

Want picturesque, nice beaches, but still quite lively - is Torquay an option, or just tourist hell?

Pack your velcro shoes and zimmer frame if you head to Torquay! 🤣

Both my neices live down that way (one just outside Exeter, one in Exmouth).

The bit between Exmouth and Lyme Regis is lovely. Not sure I'd describe any of it as lively though. Sidmouth is probably as Cornwally as it gets. And on the other side of the estuary Salcombe is the St. Ives of Devon.

Pembrokeshire might be a better idea in August.

It looks like Cornwall, is less busy, has nicer locals, a pint of Brains SA or Rev James or Stella and you're a happy camper.

But considerably colder with a greater chance of rain 😉

Naah - Pembrokeshire is lovely. Some stunning beaches in that area.

Been to Three Cliffs Bay a couple of times. Lovely, but sod all to do if the weather isn't great

Swanage, quite a few campsites, good pubs. It is tourist hell in August though, but nice places just are.

I was just going to say Swanage too. But then i live within cycling distance (for an overnighter) and ride/walk/drink there regularly.

Why go all that way to drink terrible beer?

Plenty to do in the Purbecks, without staying in Swanage itself.  Some decent biking as well, to suit wide variety of tastes.  Venturing into Swanage for day trips, is quite bearable especially if you avoid the normal peak travelling times.  Within a stones throw some very decent, and at times deserted beaches - you'll need to take a picnic / drinks, the views and water are well worth it.

Too much work on to think about going much earlier. And specifically a few days to recover after Y-Not 🤣

I really like Lynmouth/Exmoor side of North Devon. Some superb MTB around there also.
