Lo ankle, like trainers.
Waterproof
Black or v dark
Salomon Ultras are my recommendation.
As with the previous 800 threads on this in the last month though....best bet is to try some on. Not possible in lockdown obviously....

Salamon too narrow for this bear, I've ran ultras, hill races and I hill walk in these, they're the dugs baws.
You say "like trainers", do you something like an approach shoe? Grippy sole, maybe some waterproofing, good for low level stuff, likely not for big hills?
If so, Nike Pegasus Trail. It's a running shoe, but is great for walking too.

Whichever Salomon is currently half price at Go Outdoors. I used them as day-to-day footwear and I'm on my third pair in succession now.
If you're size 44 I've got some of these I'm about to put on Ebay...

Used a couple of times, just clearing out excess kit.
I've been wearing Salomons for the past 4 years but have switched now to Inov-8, they are better cushioned and a better grip, you could do trail running in them as well.

Here you go.
This ☝ is Decathlon, Go Outdoors is a bit spendy just now.

Adidas terrex gtx
Both those pairs from Decathlon and Go Outdoors are not waterproof
One of the stipulations by the OP
I love my Inov8 Rocklite 325 gtx (they do others ie 345) they have a mid ankle but they're great lightweight boots.
Merrell Moab 2 GTX - I have the non-Goretex version because I only really use then on summer when the waterproof ones are too hot.
Personally I wouldn't touch Salomons again.... I bought some GTX's for dog walking duties 4 miles twice a day and they fell apart after 5 months, I got a pair under warranty and they lasted a bit longer but then fell apart. Altbergs all the way now, they are pricey but worth every penny. Like someone said above try before you buy as they all fit different.

My bad, I missed that. Other models are available though.
If you have wide feet, swallow your pride and buy something from Keen.
Uglier than Farage's mind, but waterproof and comfy.
Merrell are my fave
Thanks all
The only shoes I've had that last long enough to wear out, as opposed to prematurely failing, are Colombia Outdry Peakfreaks. All the Inov8s, Merrells and Salomons I've used have had stitching that fell apart and/or soles that peeled off. I approached the Peakfreaks with scepticism but have been very pleased with the 3-4 pairs I've owned. I'm just about to retire the current pair with uppers intact and soles planed flat.
The Outdry waterproofing is reasonably effective but incidental. Membranes in shoes don't last. Another problem with shoes is they have a big hole in the top...

This. The inov-8 mids are basically ankle-high versions of their Roclite running shoe. Very light, quite minimalist underfoot, but super comfortable and grippy.
They've just launched a more dedicated walking boot as well, which is a more conventional lightweight boot with their Graphene sole unit, more room in the forefoot, erm, Roclite Pro G400. It should be more durable than their other mids as well. This thing:

Salomon's last fits a lot of feet pretty well. I like their lightweight stuff. KEEN, fwiw, has two lasts. The original US one which has massive forefoot volume and the European version on a lot of their later boot models, which is still generous, but a bit more refined. Berghaus's old Brasher models - basically their leather boots - also good for wide, high volume feet.

+1, although I've noticed recent models seem to be built on a narrower last - BWD's post above offers an explanation which I may investigate before I get my next pair.
Needing a very high volume toe box, Altra running shoes are now my preferred option but I'm not sure if they do anything waterproof. Having said that, in a low shoe waterproofness can be a mixed-blessing: if anything comes over the top it can't drain away.
I have been using Salomon X Ultra or XA Pro 3d, both GTX for a number of yrs with good success. Just bought a pair of reduced last seasons design (i think) adidas terrex folgian gtx mid boots and they're amazing to walk in, super comfy and really bouncy. There's lots of room in them, I am an 8 but usually size up to 8.5/9 in Salomon but he 8 in the adidas fit well with room in the toebox. Lots softer and springier in the sole than my salomons but it may be that they're a few yrs old and worn out!
sportshoes.com is pretty good for this stuff, order a couple of pairs and return the ones you don't want.

yeah, the sole is quite minimalist. I should have pointed out that i use custom footbeds which gives some extra rigidity and cushioning
