Everyone loves an STW music thread right?

I have music playing constantly in the flat. I have however realised I am not really finding much new stuff these days. A bit of radio six but thats about it
I love: soul, funk, reggae, latin rhythms, ska, EDM. don't like rap, much of country or folk music, whiny singer songwriters. Don't mind a bit of rock now and then but no poodle rock / hair metal. Love odd cover versions

Recent new to me stuff I like - Niteworks, Rumor, Quantic soul orchestra, Bamboos

todays playlist so far Quantic Soul orchestra, Bamboos, Niteworks, Gotan project

Yesterday was soul reggae funk and Ska

Day before some serious disco and EDM mixed

what you got chaps and chapesses?

Niteworks for those who don't know them - Best new to me stuff for years - I love it

Khruangbin. Perfect background music, funky, latin rhythms as well. Sassy cool girl bass player, and Donald on drums is so accurate we calibrate our atomic clocks against his timing.

Why? Everything in moderation. Listen to it less and appreciate it more. Sorry, it's my pet hate, a constant stream of music kills music for me, personally. And this is stw!

Midnight Rocker by Horace Andy.
A newish album by a veteran reggae/dub artist that I'd never heard of before but really like.

Horace Andy is brilliant. IIRC he sang on a massive attack album and they funded him to put out some new material which gave him a nerw lease of life. Try Skylarking ( the '96 version)

Give the tracks on this Erased Tapes (label) sampler album here a listen:

Depending on how alternative you like your music, some of it might hit the mark, some go too far.

Fatumata Diawara is one of my favourite artists in the last few years. Saw her playing Leaf in Liverpool a few days before the first lockdown and the whole show just blew me away.

Fenfo is a brilliant album and the resent work she's done with Damon Albarn (London Ko) is also very good, and a bit different to Fenfo

It's not folk, but could be mistaken for it at times, but try City and Colour, then You + me.

Of monsters and men might work for you, but also might have you reaching for the off switch, personally love them, start with my head is an animal though.

On the EDM front Elkka, Caroline Polacheck and Anthony Smerick have probably caught your attention on 6 recently. Bicep and Caribou too.

Even if you don't like/love rap, I would encourage you to try Loyal Carner. If it's not your think then fair enough.

Good thread. Was thinking the same thing after hardly recognising any names at Glastonbury (on TV) this year .. an age thing ..

Guy Clarke up there - when Country is all ok. Good tip @anagallis_arvensis

Similar-ish lines,

Ben Weaver? Heard him via a Salsa video where did a ride on the GDMTBR a few years back, playing a few busking type gigs as he went. Really like his music, simple folk-country kind of thing, so under-rated. Ax in the Oak is good - https://benweaver.bandcamp.com/album/the-ax-in-the-oak

Kevin Morby, mainly his older stuff?

Woods, City Sun Eater in the River of Light or With Light & With Love albums?

I love: soul, funk...

Then I'm guessing you'll love Monophonics. I think they've been around a good few years but only recently suggested to me by "the algorithm" and they are pretty damn soulful, and the lead singer has an AMAZING voice:

Not related to anything you've said you like but I've been listening to a new band called Quiet Houses a lot. They're from Edinburgh, recently saw them at the Mash House and they were even better live. I know them, Jamie is my friends son but I still really rate them. Now is this time to support young and up and coming artists.

Look up Analog Africa, you’ll definitely find some great stuff there. You can trial it all on Bandcamp too.

Have you tried Mulatu Astatke? There’s a good album with him and Heliocentrics. Also a collection called Ethiopiques that has more old Ethiopian grooves.

Not a music recommendation, but I’ve found a few radio 5 shows that have introduced me to some new stuff - Cerys Matthews, Craig Charles both have some fairly eclectic music (Cerys more so).

Well I was really impressed with speakers corner quartet at glasto on the iPlayer. Recommended by my son who is very into nuskool jazz and had a listen to their album as I drove him back from uni in manc yesterday. They are a 4 piece (well obviously!) with guest collaborators such as Kae Tempest on vocals and shubaka Hutchings on sax and other instruments. The drummer/percussionist seems to be the main guy and he had a really curious arrangement of home made instruments rigged up to a drum pad. One appeared to be made from a skateboard deck. Rhythmically very clever. Awesome bass player. Very south London but don’t hold that against them!

On the reggae side I’m assuming you’re aware of Mungo’s Hi-Fi? For classic funk Iron Leg by Mickey and the Soul Generation. The Aggrolites are a sort of modern punk, ska, reggae thing. Early albums are worth a listen. Mr Misery is a great track.

I was going to suggest the avalanches latest album too. Perhaps their first and last albums - prob too many guest hip hop vocals on the middle one for sir’s tastes although there’s some great tracks on there too.

things that’s have popped up in my ear phones this week while this thread is in play….

The Shortwave Set album ‘Debt Collection’

and Money Mark’s albums “Push the Button’ and ‘Change is Coming’

The Beastie Boys have two great wee instrumental albums too. ‘The in sound from way out’ is a compilation of instrumental interludes gathered from a few albums. ‘The Mix Up’ was planned as an instrumental only album.

On my latest playlist there were some more newish tracks which may or may not fit your criteria TJ.

Katalyst - Day into Night
Alewya - Ethiopia
The Originators - Bye Bye Bye
Black Pumas - Know You Better
Gabriels - One and Only
She She She - Trouble
The Milk - Time Don't Cost Enough
B Movie - Zuba
Night over Manaus - Boozoo Bajou
The Arcs - Put a Flower in Your Pocket
Scrapy - Rudie can Fail

and a couple of old classics

Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul - (I Got) so Much Trouble in My Mind
Marijata - I Walk Alone

The Khruangbin live at Stubbs album is fun, dropping Crystal Water's Gypsy Woman into the middle of People Everywhere and having songs from the support acts is a nice touch.

I much prefer the Arcs to the Black Keys. Dan Auerbach's bluesy output seems to have stagnated but his soulful side just keeps going to new places, so further to burntember's suggestion have a listen to all their back catalogue.
