The time has come.
A couple pf pics taken over the weekend confirmed what I already feared. The bald patch is becoming a bald head, and so it's time to take action.
So, recommend me some hair clippers please. I'll be starting with a 3 or 4 all over I think, and I'd like cordless/rechargeable so I can do it in the garden.
Thanks all.

As a baldy for most of my adult life I've been through a few sets.

These are my favourite - Remington

Waterproof, the curved blade navigates bony/curved bits of your head and the shape is easy to hold when going DIY.

I got some cheap ones which lasted probably 10 years, so you don't have to spend loads. I now have some Wahl balding ones which definitely feel higher quality but ultimately do the same thing. If they broke, I'd probably buy the same again (although cordless would be nice).

Check out Kemei. They make Wahl copies for a fraction of the price. Quality of mine are excellent and way better than the Remmington it replaced. Does feel proper trade quality. Cordless rechargeable, very powerful and last ages on a charge. Cut well. Hard to fault them, especially for the price.

Wahl seem to span a huge range from cheapo throwaway Chinese things to proper professional hairdressing tools. We bought a Wahl professional cordless thing at the beginning of lockdown and it’s been great. A Braun detail trimmer has proved less durable and will be replaced by a Wahl tomorrow, which should be better but most importantly you can get new blades for it when it becomes a hair tugger rather than a trimmer.

If you are doing it yourself then the Babyliss super crew is what you want.

Wahl are great clippers but the circular ring piece on the babyliss trumps all.

I bought a Cordless Wahl Senior clippers 2 days ago ... very nice, powerful for cordless but expensive. Very easy to zero gapped.

I have Wahl Balding and Taper too (22 year old still working like new). They are all good.

In terms of balding cut I feel like Wahl Balding is slightly better/closer than my new zero gapped Senior.

All the clippers (not trimmer) from this list are fine.

p/s: Wahl corded Legend and Icon have V9000 motor which is the most powerful in their range. Wahl Balding is only V5000 motor. For their cordless range Senior is more powerful than Magic.

I've tried numerous varieties over the years, never thrown away a working one, they've all broken until getting the philips multigroom 7000 4 (maybe 5) years ago.
Good enough that now my dad and oldest son also have the same.

I bought cordless Wahl Senior in first lockdown and have been using it ever since. All I can say: £120 well spent! I like it a lot and it fits my wife's small hand quite well when she cuts my hair. Definitely highly recommended.
Ps. If you decide to go for it, make sure to read description before you click "buy". Go for the one with 10 premium comb attachments. Sometimes you can come across the ones with only 3 combs in the box.

Wahl for the grade 2/3/4 if that's what you want, but bald patches are bald patches.

Best decision I ever made was to get the razor out and take all that fluffy shit off. A couple of minutes every other day scraping one of Harry's finest over the scalp, splash of moisturiser and I'm like a right said Fred (apart from the politics)

I've also got the Remington robola linked to. I use it on the longest setting and it's great. Very easy to do yourself

Can I suggest looking here? They sell refurbished clippers but mine were completely as new with no evidence of use. Buying through the refurbished bit means you get access to the professional grade kit which lasts way longer. Would suggest the Cordless Legend or the Cordless Magic Clip..

Wahl currently offer 20% off with the code SUMMER20 which makes the price of new ones not far off the refurbished price. Unsurprisingly the code doesn’t work on refurbished stuff.

Get cordless version because it is so convenient.

Battery can be upgraded in future so no worries.

At the moment I am searching for a spare Wahl balding clipper housing for the blades so I can modify my Cordless Senior in future.

I've had a few sets. The Babylis ones were the best. I don't recommend the Phillips multi groom. Bought it going it would do beard as well. It's a jack of all trades but master of none.

That explains a lot. I thought they were well-regarded but I've had a couple of Wahl trimmers both of which died after light use. The mistake I was making presumably then was shopping at TK-Maxx.

the circular ring piece on the babyliss trumps

Well, it would.

When my current trimmer dies. I'd be tempted to look for one with a dial to adjust cutting length- saves faffing with guides & having loads that never get used.

When my current trimmer dies. I’d be tempted to look for one with a dial to adjust cutting length

Funnily enough my last inexpensive (Lidl?)set battery only lasts for about 10 minutes now (not bad after 8 years bi-weekly use?) - and I just last week bought another inexpensive set (online) with that kind of dial. Not that I use the dial because I just go grade zero (or closest I can get, which is 0.8 mm with these)

Anyway really happy with these new ones so far. Apparently have a 90 minute charge in them (there’s a little screen that tells you how much charge is left) you can adjust the power and you can adjust the length of the trim with a twist of the dial BUT you still get a bag full of those little comb-things of different lengths 😖. Also being waterproof/rinsable is important to me as I often do it in a shower. The other important thing for me is I having them USB-rechargeable. These do that also, but do need the figure8-USB cable which comes with them.

So these are rinsable/IPX6 waterproof, quiet, have a 90 minute battery with charge % display screen, adjustable power/speed, USB rechargeable, titanium/ceramic blades, and instantly adjustable cut-length via dial. Have they missed anything?
