Alrighty you lot. As you are all a frightfully classy and discerning bunch, who better to point me in the direction of somewhere nice to stay for the weekend. For reasons picking-a-new-bike-up related I shall be up in north Yorkshire.
So I was thinking of making a weekend of it and taking her-good-self away for a couple of nights. So... have you stayed anywhere nice in the Yorkshire Dales/North York Moors. A good pub perhaps? Decent B&B.
Not fussed about riding. Well.... maybe a quick blat to christen the new toy. But the priority would be some decent walking without needing to drive anywhere. Oh... and somewhere that does great food would be a bonus. I intend to eat like Henry the eighth 😀
Your words of wisdom purleez.....
Punchbowl Inn in Swaledale - nice rooms, great food and loads of walking from the doorstep (also loads of great riding)
http://www.pbinn.co.uk/index.htm
the sun inn, Harome
pretty dam good.
Where are you picking the bike up from?
And more importantly, what bike??
Eleven Westgate - Pickering
I know Mike and Amanda pretty well, love going to stay here.
It's close to Dalby if you do want to ride, Mike is also an MTB guide, and Pickering has loads of lovely places to eat and drink within easy walking distance
🙂
Whereabouts you thinking of fella??
Great to see you Sat BTW..
Lion Inn??
my parents' place is in Goathland, near to Pickering and Whitby. You get a mini-apartment, 4poster, etc and all quite nice. Good value too. Nice breakfast (we made some bacon a while back).

If i was there i'd show you some cheeky riding, but you'll have to make do with Dalby or using an OS map. Think of the peak district but without long brake bumps or walkers everywhere.
As for a pub, check out Birch Hall Inn ( http://www.beckhole.info/bhi.htm) Words can't describe how good that is.
I'll second Teetosugars recomendation, the lion is a lovely place, good grub and nice selection of ales, and a fantastic location. I've had quite a few good nights up there in the past.
I'm getting an Orange Pure 7 Wors, off a gentleman from this very forum. I decided on Saturday I need a steel hardtail. Location-wise I'll be at Scotch Corner to pick it up, so anywhere within striking distance.
There's some great suggestions here folks. Some lovely looking places. Exactly what I was after. Than you very muchly. Hmmmmmmm.... Decisions decisions
Oh... and great to see you Saturday too teetoosugars. We'll have to come over for a Delamere jaunt soon
If you want to do something really special, The Blue Lion at East Witton is absolutely top notch, French owner/chef, bar meals or restaurant, good beer from what I recall. It's not cheap, but worth every penny IMO

It's Julia Bradbury's favourite pub/resturant/hotel in Yorkshire (I didn't know that, just spotted it on their website, a copy of an interview with her in The Yorkshire Post)

Stayed here and it was brill. Haworth is great for pubs and eateries and quaint for just wandering round. Salts mill not far away, good shopping for housey stuff lots of really cool furniture and artwork and All Terrain good for a wander round too.
Edit: just realised this is more West Yorkshire, but still nice.
Second the Punchbowl - [url> http://www.pbinn.co.uk/index.htm
]Punchbowl - its really nice. They have a sister pub the Charles Bathurst up the road.
Angel Inn at Hetton, Yorkshire Dales - excellent food, walking and biking right out the door. Can't seem to get their site to work, but suspect thats because I'm at work. Cant comment on the accomodation as its so close to home but go there often because of the food.
This place in Harrogate is brilliant.
The Orchid Restaurant in the Hotel is also fantastic.
Stayed there a few times, worth the extra to upgrade to one of the executives or suites too ! Really nice.
And the deal they have at the moment is crazy .....

Another vote for Angel Inn at Hetton if you can stretch to the Southern Dales. As seen on that Coogan/Brydon comedy roadtrip show. Rather swizzy place really. Bridleway over to Malham starts about 50 yards away.
Or, slightly handier for Scotch Corner:

Nice restaurant with rooms.
The Orchid is nice, agreed, but bloody expensive. The nicest place to stay in Harrogate is Rudding Park though - a great hotel and lovely restaurant. A drive/taxi into town though. Also Harrogate is neither Moors nor Dales (although a short drive to either).
I really like this place in Malham - and a great little walk right on the doorstep...
A bit of the way, but I liked the New Inn and Cropton Brewery. Nowt spectacular, just a well priced, classic English roadside inn. With a brewery.
An if you and the missus are in the area, I'd highly recommend going for a hurl on on of the steam trains at Pickering
Dales Bike Centre! Very nice for a bike centre, good pub a stroll away.
+1 for Dales bike centre
Had a couple of nights here;
http://www.oldstationhousehawes.co.uk/
A stones throw from the centre of Hawes.
Lots of walks on the doorstep.
Various pubs and restaurants in town.
The Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw in Wensleydale is nice (if still open!)
ianven - MemberThe Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw in Wensleydale is nice (if still open!)
It is indeed, and it's only a mile or 2's walk from the Old Station House in Hawes 🙂
Camped in Reeth, lovely town, a good selection of boozers and B&B's. Walking and biking from the door.
THe Green Dragon, the most expensive beer in Wensleydale.
Spent 5 days here the year before last. Amazing views, way up on its own north side of Swaledale near Gunnerside.
Road up might be a dicey if its icey, mind. Worth having a chat with the lady who runs the company, think we came to an arrangement due to last minute, length of stay, time of year...

Another vote for the Star at Harome - http://www.thestaratharome.co.uk/
Also consider the Black Swan Hotel - http://www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk/ - and Feversham Arms - http://www.fevershamarmshotel.com/ - both in Helmsley.
All three are handy for Castle Howard which the missus will probably like, and Helmsley is not too far from the A1.
+2 for the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge
Stayed there a fewtimes - goodhonest food with (what I remember as) huuuuge portions, but then the memories could be clouded by the huge quantities of ale. Do not try and drink the bar 😉
Views are something else, dalby's close and there are some trials out of the pub door - you could race the missus down to Hutton le hole.
Punch Bowl, Charles Bathhurst and DBC all within about 30 mins of Scotch Corner. For pitys sake dont actually stay at the scotch corner hotel 😉
The Angel Inn at Hetton is great. Bit of a trek from Scotch Corner though.
Nice bar food and a brilliant restaurant.
Isn't there a Little Chef at Scotch Corner?
