As title, looking for new brakes to complete my ever changing build.
It’s for my Epic evo. - The Elixirs just need to go.

A mate of mine have recommended Formula RX's which I like the feel. any others i should be thinking of?

Magura MT8 look pretty nice.

Or XTR with ice tech rotors and those cooling fins.....

2nd Maguras - I've got 5 sets (all Louise/Marta) and I love them 🙂

Formula R1 - havent had to bleed them yet so cant comment on faff factor or otherwise. Very grabby to begin with (pads I guess) but now tremendous.

Sensible head says just buy XT though.

'XC brakes' and 'uber power' is a bit of an oxymoron but Magura are probably your best bet. I've just set up a set of five year old Martas on my bike and they look like new and work brilliantly. I picked up one of the new MT ones in a shop the other day and they weigh next to nothing.

The new KCNC brakes are also very bling and are meant to have fantastic performance.

You won't go far wrong with formula IME.

Magura are good but can be a bit fiddly. I would go for new XT - super powerful & quite shiny too..

No they are not. I reckon with the Tech X2's neither the bike shops or people doing their own servicing do the extra bit of the bleeding process as per the Hope video, so never have them properly set up.

They are not the most powerful brakes in the world, but I have got down some of the biggest, steepest descents in Scotland one finger braking. For XC, they are plenty powerful enough, easy to service and nicely bling

There is only 1 correct answer, and it's XTR 985.

Shiny shiny, light, more powerful than Saint. There is no reason to get anything other than them.

XT with big rotors - seem nicer than my Magura Louise.

umm thinking for the Formula R1's. Front or back first?
I DONT have the money to do both 🙁 thats what happens when you splash out on a wheelset...

Formula R1 are light and very powerful, had mine well over a year and no bleed, lost several lever bolts though at £8 a pop, yes £8 for one bolt.

+1 for XT's with big rotors. Really good power and adjustablility. possibly not that bling though.

-1 for Hope's Had two sets before giving up on their lack lustre power.

Not a huge fan of the Formula K18 I have on the back of my bike. Pads are tiny and wear ridiculously quickly - I've got through about 3 sets of pads whilst the front Avid has only got through 1. I use both brakes fairly evenly as well rather than dragging the rear all the time like I used to.

What would you get, front or back first. probably will have to wait 2 months to get the other.

Front is way more important - upgrade that one first.

I ended up with the Hope X2's over R1's. While the R1's are lighter and seem to have better power they were twice the price of the X2's...

So went X2's (w/o rotors), replaced all the bolts with Ti left-overs and added Ashima rotors. Half the price and I can still lock both ends with single-finger braking. Does me.

Another vote for R1s
I'm running mine with Hope floating rotors as the formula ones are a bit too floaty, and EBC red stuff pads. All I'll ever need.
Only downside (other than price!) is Goodridge don't do a fitting kit for their hoses.
Got two sets at present and keeping an eye on classsifieds/fleabay for some The Ones for my big bike.

I like my RX's, great brakes; got them cheap off a mate 🙂 The red anodising didn't match the gold bits on your bike anyway.....

HAHA

Think I'll buy an R1 front with 160mm rotor. I take it these have braided hoses as standard?

SID's only take up to 180mm but 160mm should be powerful enuff.

If you want stopping power go for a 180mm rotor - quite easy to cook a 160mm on big descents.

Formula don't do braided hose iirc. And it's heavy.
