David Sedaris (spl?)

Once you can accept his accent, he has a joyous way of telling stories.

I mentioned the accent as it had put me off listening. Then, I came across him again on a long flight and realised I was utterly wrong.

Delicious story telling.

In Our Time is always fascinating, even when on subjects you might not normally be interested in.

More or Less is good too.

And Desert Island Discs is always worth a listen, and it's often the people you've never heard of who make the best shows.

Don't forget R4 extra, Ed Reardon, Round the Horne, On the Hour, Old Harry's Game. Some of the old dramas are quite compelling, Dorothy L Sayers' 'Wimsey' in on at the moment.

'The infinite monkey cage' if you have any interest in science-y things. The whole back catalogue is available on iPlayer.

Lee and Herring's Fist of Fun has recently been re-run on 4 extra at the mo'. It's Not What You Know is good too, as is Tim Key's Poetry Programme. Not Radio 4, but the Lee Herring at the Leicester Square Theatre Podcasts are very funny too.

Along with the ones already mentioned: Mark Steel's In Town, especially funny if you live in or know the areas being ridiculed.

Well done APF 🙂 Edit: That was a pun wasn't it?!

The current series of dead ringers is most excellent.

There was also a fascinating interview with Denis Norton yesterday at 9am (bloody traffic) that's definitely worth a listen.

Another edit: Very interesting doc on tea plantations (file on 4) just finished, which is worth a listen. Not happy listening though 😕

Get a three sim and just listen to it live as you drive across France, we did it two weeks ago and over 450 miles we only dropped signal 4 times.

Tune in radio is a brilliant app

R4 ones on subscription on my phone are :-

Costing the earth
Infinite Monkey cage
Desert Island Discs (pick and choose if I bother depending on the person)
Great Lives (pick and choose if I bother depending on the person- and you have to forgive Matthew Paris for his stupid anti bike nonsense first)
Friday Night Comedy
Thinking Allowed

Also, In true stw fashion, recommending something not asked for....

A non R4 one....Damn Interesting - they only issue a new one every now and again but always worth it.

Looking at these lists, it saddens me so much that the government is cutting it back.

Chain reaction is worth a listen IMO, all the others I like have already been mentioned.

Oh and I like gardeners question time but I don't think that's what you're after

Making history - strangely enough a history magazine programme
Human zoo - interesting series about psychology
Punt PI - Steve punt investigates some pretty random yet intriguing mysteries
Ddigital human - IT / tech programme

Not radio 4, but a podcast well worth a download - No such thing as a fish. Basically the QI elves sitting around talking about their favourite facts they've discovered each week - interesting sharp and witty

Ooh and 'listen against' if you can find it in the back catalogue, one of the funniest things to ever grace R4

Just grab a couple of episodes of any answers. You'll really appreciate the fact you're in another country, away from those bell ends.

The infinite monkey cage is definitely well worth getting though. When is a strawberry really dead?

In And Out Of The Kitchen and David Sedaris are my current favourites although some of the dramas aside, there's not much I don't like on Radio 4.

The Classic Serial at the weekend is very good, can't stand anything with Stephen Fry in it, Melvyn Bragg or many of the comedians - who are a bit stale now.

If you're going for RHLSTP then I can recommend the Stephen Fry and Tim Minchin ones (the latter definitely not recommended if you have kids in the car).

If it's not already been mentioned then a History of the world in 100 objects was fascinating and great listening.

I largely agree with most of what's been said above but can I also recommend The Bugle podcast, it's probably the most 'Radio 4-like' audio program to have never actuallyed on Radio 4.

I should probably declare my vested interests in that I appear to have developed a slightly weird bleeding heart liberal man-crush on John Oliver.
