.....resonating guitars, roughened vocals, almost like a speaker cone has blown but usually with something pure over the top or a neat guitar riff in place of a chorus. Not bothered by lyrics but by the overall sound. Can anyone recommend me songs (rather than artists) that sound like that? I know it is a wooly description but still, any suggestions?
Examples of what I mean from my own collection:
Smoke Fairies - Let Me Know
Dunno bout the speaker blown thing, but here's some stuff I likes
too much??
EDIT: how do you get the you tube video to link directly in??
Clicky on the video button at the top of the text box below, delete text already in the dialogue box, past text in, post.
Let me take you backwards, backwards in time ...
(Screen ripples)
try this OP.these guys have pretty much made career on what your describing.
fingers crossed my postings work properly this time
EDIT: Huzzah - thanks @counzero, another technological hurdle overcome!
Not sure if this fits the bill, but it ticks a whole bunch of boxes for me:
Mellissa auf der Maur
Arc Iris. And Josie Adams wears that green onesie on stage. Great band, mad as a bag of owls.
You'll be wanting Sleigh Bells.
Avi Buffalo What's It In For
Oh, and you're more than welcome. 😀
Jangly guitars and ropey vocals all over the place...
The intro to my favourite album ever.
Breeders: Cannonball
Not quite fitting your description but a pretty decent track anyway.
Ride: leave them all behind
@kerbdog - strong choices sir i suspect we may well be in the same musical groove.
but if you're going to go for something featuring Kim Deal surely it's got to be the below. also kind of ticks the OP's box, other than something pure over the top (unless you include kims backing vocals) as theres never been anything pure about black francis!
PLEASURE
From your initial description two bands sprung to mind... first..
You need to have a listen to "Enfilade" and "One Armed Scissor" off
At The Drive In's "Relationship of Command" album.
Then ,have you heard Sunny Day Real Estate? Try "seven" off the "Diary" album...
I may have to add them to the listened to most thread ..... 😀
I would recommend anythi
Screw you video option!!!!

will have to do[/url]
I cant see the videos at work so not sure if this is a repeat but my suggestions are
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Neutral Milk Hotel
A friends band. Might do it for you, might not.
Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky should hit the spot.
Cheers all! Some good suggestions there and some nice new bands. Already listen to some of the suggestions so you must all be on the right track sound wise!
Loop
Kyuss
Another example of the rough/sweet mix I'm after: Madder Rose - Beautiful John

You first example track didn't tally with what I expected from your description, but having heard it I'd say it's very PJ Harvey. I assume you've already been down that route but if not, do yourself a favour.
Superstar
The Dirtbombs
The Raconteurs
Pixies
Breeders
Belly
The Muffs
L7 (bit heavier)
pretty much any 90s indie guitar band really!
Kayla1 - all good suggestions, although I'm not familiar with The Muffs, I have seen all the others.
Few others you may or may not be familiar with
Tried to post this earlier on my phone but monumentally failed.
I would recommend anything by Shellac - they have a sound all of their own which fits your description nicely. They get this sound as they build their own amps and guitars. Also because one of them is Steve Albini who has probably worked on a lot of the songs/albums already mentioned.
Here's a song about riding bikes:
Not a bad tune on here yet, all great stuff, especially DezB, tah.
Luna & Galaxie 500.
Features one Tom Verlaine adding some nice lead lines too.
As we've already had Kim Deal. & Sonic Youth mention how's about the Kim's together?
<3
Anything by the much missed Sparklehorse.
