Knee length, fairly dense weave, not necessarily warm, not too bulky, unlike most walking socks. These would be for MTBing to keep a bit of splash from my shins. I have Sealskinz ones for minging conditions, but I was considering something a bit lighter and less bulky.

I guess football socks would work at a pinch but I haven't bought any of those since I was in school so I don't know what modern ones are like.

Hmm looks like knee length running socks are a thing, they could be good.

Football or running socks. Running socks tend to have a bit of cushioning and some compression. Football socks tend to be tougher so ok with the odd bramble or pedal bite. I use both. Probably prefer running socks but they don't last as long

Might be worth looking at the hunting socks Decathlon do.

I use the '900 warm long socks' as welly socks year round, and I'd say they are a similar thickness to mid-weight hiking socks I have, and as good as some more expensive Smartwool ski socks.

The '500 long socks' look ideal if you're after something lighter-weight.

I'm wearing these https://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-compression-running-socks-mens-415508#colcode=41550803 at this very moment having been out joggering. They'd fit the bill, very well made and nice comfy footbeds.
Obviously Sportsdirect are the mortal enemy of all mankind etc.. but I like the socks.

Gore do some thermo long for cycling - I have a couple of pairs I wear through the winter and they work well; relatively thin, not constricting. Mine are a few years old, and look a bit different to the newer ones on sale now.

Decathlon running socks are great, and quite hard wearing. I do plenty of trail running and so brambles are a standard hazard and these last well. I actually just buy the sleeves and I’m picky about the socks I wear and how high the sock sits, but they’re all the same material.
