can be space/fantasy but has to be free (as i'm part scottish 😉
happy new year btw 🙂
This is a deep dark hole that you're getting into. I can't think of many truly free MMORPGs except I think RuneCraft (fantasy) is still free but I can't promise how good it is. I used to play one called Flyff years ago that was some Korean/Japanese madness although it's another straight fantasy type; bear in mind I have no idea whether it still exists or has any community.
I think with Eve (space/fantasy/spreadsheet simulator) you can get a free month and then earn subsequent months in game (can obviously pay with real people coins as well).
After fully free stuff you have things like Guild Wars and FF XIV where you pay one off for the game but there are no subscription fees that I'm aware of.
Then of course you have the big one. WoW. A tenner a month with cost of the expansions on top of that. I used to play this and got to a point where I realised I was going to fail my degree. This has gone through a reasonable drop on subscriptions with the release of the latest expansion, but I'd say that if you were after a really polished MMO and had the time, effort and wallet to play this I'd say go for it. It will take over your life if you let it though.
If I was going to give proper advice I'd say don't bother with MMOs and go outside occasionally, make friends and play some normal "boring" video games. But hey, take what you will of this.
Can't help you with recommendations as I've been clean now for almost eight years.
I played asherons call from the beta 0, and it took over my life. Be very careful getting into an MMORPG as they can be tough to get out of!
That said, free mmorpg's tend to be worth what you pay for - wow will at least deliver a quality experience that the free ones struggle to deliver.
Good luck, and don't forget to eat/sleep/work/wash in the real world every so often.
