Oh what a sad and boring life I lead...
Fed up with my kitchen knives losing their edge. I suspect a large part of the reason why is the knife block I currently own.
So I'd like one that will not blunt them. Needs to hold 5 knives of various sizes. Is magnetic the way to go? Self sharpening? No idea, regale me with your answer before I end on a worm hole of internet reviews...
Thanks all.
I have a magnetic wooden one - this one.
I used to have one of those simple Ikea metal magnetic strips on the wall, but never liked the metal on metal aspect. The magnetic wooden block feels more appropriate for nice knives.
I've got something pretty similar to Timmy - been quite happy with it..
We have a wooden magnetic one on the wall. The knives hang down from it, away from the wall. I have nicked myself on the tip of one when I had lots of stuff on the worktop and picking something at the back up, poking a hole in me and pulling the knife off at the same time. So for a safety perspective it's fairly low.
We have a wooden one that fully encloses the blades but has a removable plastic liner for holding the knives. No blunting of the knives and the liner is washable if it gets a bit dusty/ some idiot spills stuff in it etc.
Oh for a knife block.
Personally, I like to spend time getting the knives beautifully sharp so that they'll cut a tomato by knife weight alone.
The other half then likes to pick them up for use, drag the keen edges across the knife steel at all sorts of ridiculous angles, most of them perpendicular, and then when washed, plunge them into a metal cutlery drainer full of other cutlery or edge down onto the metal draining rack.
No amount of mansplaining seems to discourage this habit 😊
Sorry. Had to purge my pent up knife frustrations.
Carry on
I’ve been happy with this Wooden magnet solution stuck to the kitchen wall

I've had one of these for the last few years. It's housed my set of Victorinox knives, recommended on here, and it's kept them bastard sharp.👌
Amazon jobbie - Linking on this site is so shit.. wow it 's even worse as it turn amazon link into Kindle pages.. ffs. I went for a Innoteck Essentials 3in1 Stainless Steel Knife Block, as I was struggling to decide, this is cheap enough I can dump it, if I find I hate it. I don't have a full set of chef knifes, so having a half empty wooden knife block, seemed silly.
Also brought a "AnySharp Knife Sharpener", after seeing it recommended by a chef on a YT channel I watch (He did say he hadn't used it in years, having learnt to do it properly)
PS: I feel much better after seeing you post this, as I post so many rubbish questions & was going to ask this question, but held back 🤣
Another vote for wall mounted magnetic knife holder. Which I might add is the professional preferred method of keeping the knives safe and out the way.
.
As for sharpening. I use the Chantry sharpener. BUT you need a decent knife, by which I mean made of a good quality steel.
I've used oil stones, whet stones, professional electrical sharpeners costing over a grand, in industry and other professional settings and I still find the £30 Chantry to be good enough to keep the knife at a very keen edge.
You press down hard and it has a grinding effect, and light pressure for a honing effect.
TIP - ALWAYS WIPE THE KNIFE AFTER SHARPENING/HONING
No idea if they are any good, but I've always liked the look of the 'bunch of plastic rods' style knife block, like these:

Like the IKEA one up there.....
Yeah def go with magnetic, you don't want the edge dragging on anything. I have a wooden (magnetic core) strip on the wall, mostly to save on counter space
I made one ages ago, then had to modify it when my daughter decided we needed a 6" cooks knife that she could manage. Had to route the top out of the centre section, and make a new tier, which is why the black walnut sides don't go all the way up.
@daffy, shouldn't do. Washing in a dish washer will (chemically) un-sharpen knives really quickly though.
Love that chives! Very nice work. 👍
I've had magnetic wall blocks but now have a wooden one that sits in the drawer. You place knives in the slots so they don't get dragged in and out. And less clutter on the wall.

Oh thank god I thought it was just mine. After 30years of marriage I've given up. Ours tend just to go in the dishwasher to rattle around with all the other cutlery. I even tried his and her knives at one point.
Now we just use blunt knives for everything. This is akin to preparing vegetables with the edge of a spoon but after all those years you learn to adapt.
cant fault our "upturned brush in a tube"
If using a block where the knives are inserted at an angle, always insert with the blade facing upwards.
I've got a procook version of this... but in more of a black ash wood colour

There are also worktop standing ones too..

Was going to say I've used one of those ones with plastic kerplunk straws in before and though it was good for various knives. We use a bamboo tray insert from IKEA, works ok for us.
Older version of this, used to be all bamboo, looks like it's been upgraded to plastic for some reason.

I just couldn't, I just couldn't.
