It's not for me but i need to buy an album, slightly gritty, slightly towards the anthemic maybe. I know as good as nothing about rock/indie/guitar so feel free to state the bleeding obvious. I'd like to get something new ,good quality and not too mainstream please, so any advice appreciated.
thank you.

You will have heard Black Keys, their stuff is all over the telly, adverts, more telly, radio, telly and telly at the moment, even if you've not heard the name.

"Gold on the ceiling, dedur dedur, dedur, dedur" That one.

Their older stuff is bloody excellent too, Thickfreakness would be my starting point. The new one probably fits your brief more closely on the "anthemic" now that they've got backing vocals and, er, bass guitars and such nonsense.

Muse would fit, other than the "not too mainstream" bit.

Band of Skulls? (only heard one of theirs, "The Devil Takes Care of his Own" but it seemed to meet the "gritty" criteria with a bit of an "anthemic" thing going on with the chorus.)

(My definition of anthemic with music is something along the lines of "you and your mates can all shout the chorus together when p*ssed")

Temper Traps first album has a big sound and is well worth a listen, don't bother with the new one it's a bit poo.

Also Bloc Partys older stuff is good, they've got a new album as well but not got/listened to it yet.

I'll check out the gaslight album myself.

+1 for The Black Keys, can't quite believe how much I like their stuff.

Failing that, Muse (although that's a little more sci-fi than gritty)

I have also enjoyed the works of Dinosaur Jr and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden too, but then I really discovered music round the turn of the nineties hence my choices

Also my tuppence for Frank Black

Chutney13.

How old is the person you're buying for? Do you know what bands they like?

Otherwise we could recommend everything and nothing will still be right.

Not sure about anthemic (EDIT - or new!), but for gritty indie rock, look no further than Afghan Whigs' "Gentlemen".

They were never really 'cool', they're ok, but Martin's voice is just so one-dimensional, really. They do put on a good show, from what I've seen, and Chris is a funny bloke. Popular, certainly, but cool? Seriously?
If you want cool, you have to look elsewhere.
I would suggest The Joy Formidable, Blood Red Shoes, Black Mountain, Dark Star,* Gang Of Four, and Metric.
*this is a three-piece band from the 80's, only released on official album, 20:20 Sound, and an unreleased one, Zurich which has turned up online in an unfinished mix form. Very loud, the drums were a physical assault; using maracas as drumsticks for a 'fuller sound'!

Coldplay cool, that is funny. Broken Social Scene +1. Try The Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America. Funny, anthemic, loud and sarcastic..

keeping on the Frank Black theme, I'd say its a no brainer...has to be something by the Pixies...

Assuming its not for you then get their album 'Doolittle'....it'll be the gift that keeps on giving, a work of sheer awesomness

Or,

(some patience required. You can skip to 4 minutes for your anthemic, if you want... But that would mark you out as a heathen)

Frank Black....again. Either of the first two albums ( frank black or Teenager of the year) Both awesome albums ~ who knows what happened to him after that, lost the plot a bit. Or delving further back into Pixies time, "Trompe le Monde" is their noisiest and my personal fave - the track Planet of Sound is splendid! 😀
