Issey Miyake 'L'eau d'Issey' seems to go down well.

Paul Smith 'Extreme' has a similar fresh scent.

Hugo Boss 'Boss' is an old standby too.

I agree with the above Issey recommendations - lovely scent.

I do still like Davidoff Cool Water and there is a Ted Baker one that is quite nice but I have no idea what it is called.

Sexpanther is from Anchorman... watch it now!

Yep, that's what I wear at the moment (when I bother), and it's just about to run out so this surprise gift your planning is perfectly timed.

Cerruti 1884. On no less* than three occasions have (previously unknown to me) women approached me in the street to say how nice I smell (and one of them was an Italian woman in Rome, which maybe counts double?!)!

Ace**!

*and no more, to be strictly accurate.

**although admittedly maybe slightly less ace given that these encounters have occured over a fifteen year period?

How old is the chap you are buying it for?

Some fragrances are more suited for older/younger chaps.

I have had several ladies tell me that 212 smells really good on me, but alas, I genuinely have no sense of smell, so it's used purely for their benefit. I do remember that Cerruti 1884 wasn't as popular though.

In the days when I could smell owt, I found I preferred things like Nivea, Vicks and Germolene, yet ladies don't seem to favour these as scents. 🙁

I've been painting a cabinet with gloss paint. I am sad I cannot enjoy that particular smell.

Well the specialists at St Barts aren't really sure. They think one likely explanation is damage to olfactory nerve endings following a sinus infection, but around the same time, I had a bike crash which left me with concussion, so they're not ruling out some form of slight neurological damage too.

slight neurological damage too

Hahahahaaaaahhahahahahahahhahahhahhahahahaha... I bet they're not!!

Must make eating pretty boring.

Sorry Elf... someone was going to.
Do you find eating really boring?
My Grandad lost his sense of smell... loved food, after losing his sense of smell got no pleasure out of eating.

Sense of taste is slightly diminished, but still there. Suggesting neurological damage may be very slight indeed, if there is any at all. Still get to enjoy food, which is a relief. No point in me spending loads on spensive wine and that, as half the appeal is lost. In fact I'm not bothered about wine these days, prefer a beer.

I thought taste and smell were inextricably linked? Not questioning you, but I'm genuinely interested.

I dunno Yeti. The specialists said neurological damage usually means a person can lose sense of taste and smell, but can sometimes knock out just one. Complete permanent loss of smell following just a sinus infection is apparently extremely unusual, and only likely after chronic long-term illness really. They reckon it's probbly a combination of the two.

I had to get a brain scan. The resulting image just shows an empty void. 😐

I know what you mean, but I can't imagine those sort of blokes wanting to smell of anything but Lynx or soap 😆

You should research some of the ideas mentioned in this thread on http://www.basenotes.net/

My recommendation would not work for your chap.

Good luck with sniffing out the right fragrance!

[img] [/img]

available on t'net for about E37

Papa Cheri by Fragonard, Grasse, Provence, France - www.fragonard.com. If you happen to be with 50 miles of Nice, I heartily recommend a visit to Grasse

lasts forever. I bought a 200ml bottle in summer 2007, I still haven't finished the bottle, although I did buy another bottle about 6 months ago, haven't needed to start it yet

instead of aftershave, why not treat him to a shave? A proper, barber's shave with hot towels, oils and cut throat razors.

Diesel is only £1.30 a litre, quite cheap IMO.

I use 'Only the brave' EDT. A couple of sprays everyday and a £30 bottle lasts about 7 months or thereabouts. I make that good value.

If budget is a consideration, then I'd also recommend Clinique Happy. It's my 'every day' scent and often gets complimented on.

I also like Armani Code and Essenza de Zegna for something a bit different.

I reject all this high street fragrances for a special mix I have formulated for me in Italy.

I'm not too sure of the detail, but I believe its made from powdered Elephants tusks, the fins of Great White Sharks and Siberian tigers teeth.

My Italian mate Silvio says he swears it, and even though he's getting on a bit, it seems to be going down an absolute storm with the Laydeeez
