Mostly Apple stuff in our house (Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and iMac - yeah I know 🙂 ) but my GF has a Windows laptop. Current router is many years old and seems to often run very slow and kick my iPad/phone off the network and ask for the password again.

It's not just the ISP service running slowly as it's bad for just playing stuff on Airplay over Wifi from my computer upstairs.

I have heard some routers don't like Macs but I dunno if that's true. What's good and will play nice with Windows and Macs? Or is the problem likely to be something else?

Thanks.

Apple Time Capsule. Works absolutely amazingly well.

If you have Cable broadband or BT Infinity, just plug it into the MODEM. If on ADSL, you need to get an ADSL MODEM...

EDIT - And yes it works perfectly fine with Windows computers.
ANOTHER EDIT - and those beardy Linux ones.

TP LINK TL-WR1043ND is brilliant. Super fast, stable and reliable, no matter what and how many devices are connected.

Don't get a Time capsule they run very well but die after a year or two, check the Apple site reviews

I replaced mine with a AirPort Extreme and plugged in 3tb external hard drive for back-ups.

1st generation time capsule had issues with failing after a couple of years. That was fixed a long time ago.

I have one of these - haven't touched it in six months. Was described as the "Wayne Rooney of routers" - ugly but great performance.

Set up was a doddle, auto configured itself.

Just gone through this and begged a free Netgear router off the ISP, that way they can't say 'we don't support your hardware'. So far so good (was rebooting several times a day).

Another vote here for an Airport Extreme. I've had mine for about four years. As per Frankers I just plugged a 1TB drive into the back of it and use that as a NAS.

Thanks folks. Might try the blogging a new one off the ISP approach first. If I did get AirPort Extreme and plugged in a HD, would I be able to access that via my Apple TV?

*slight hijack*

(Not being that computer savvy) I have an Airport Express which has a USB port. If my printer wasn't plugged into that, could I fit an external drive and use it as a back-up? Would that be hard to set up or will the Airport Utility do it for me?

Thanks 🙂

some routers don't like Macs

Theoretically, wireless (and Ethernet) are standards. You shouldn't need to look for a router with 'Mac support', or Linux support, or anything.

If a router and a Mac don't work together, either it's a bug or one end is otherwise doing something it shouldn't. (Which TBH is probably more likely than it should be.)

OK thanks again chaps. Not managed to get in touch with the ISP yet but I'm tempted by an Airport Extreme.

No you can only access it through your Mac

I have an Airport Extreme - worked great for years. Use it as a NAS with USB drives plugged into it. Works fine with Macs and Windoze.

I've had two Airport Expresses and they've been less than reliable.

Thanks. Presumably I could use it as a networked drive on my iMac, then play it on Apple TV via that, but it doesn't sound very efficient.

Grum,

You can access the external drive from your AppleTV as long as its version 1 (silver) and you've hacked it. That is what I do, running XBMC on my AppleTV with all of my movie files on the external drive attached to the back of the AEBS. The drive is then also available on the network.

I don't know if it's possible with AppleTV v2 & 3 but it would be worth checking out the Firecore website for details of their hack for the black AppleTVs.
