Crap signal in the attic room, do they work?
I'd get a powerline one - they're very effective IME
TP link powerline extender here. I live in a house built in 1650 (2' thick sandstone walls), hasn't been rewired in 40 years. They work very well and If they work here, they will almost certainly work for you.

Just be wary if you have fibre broadband (VDSL, not cable) as depending on how your home is wired you might find that you have a significant impact on your broadband connection.
Mine involved a visit from Openreach to reset the DLM. 🙁
Bought an Asus 802.11ac router instead and that gets a decent signal all over the house.
+1 for TPlink powerlines
We've got them dotted arround the house. Found they worked best if setup on the 2.4 band that way stuff we knew was in range of the router (ps3, pc in the study) could be setup on the 5.0 band and not worry about it jumping between signals.
I bought this netgear ex2700 and so far it has been excellent. Very impressed. Thanks for the help.
I recently purchased a Devolo 1200 wifi to solve the same problem. It wasn't cheap, but the performance is fantastic.
From what I've read, this is the fastest performing extender on the market.
