Buggeration. My Herman miller aeron is causing me all kinds of uncomfortable grief. Now given to my wife to use. Thank god I got it in a sale and didn’t pay full retail, still a total pita.

So I’m reluctantly on the look out for a new home work chair.

All i give a monkeys about this time, is a non mesh base, got to be a supported cushioned base. Decent lumbar support and not so bloody massive that all anyone sees in the office is the chair. And not costing a bomb either.

So moon on a stick please.

I do have a stand sit desk, which I’ll also upgrade from the manual ikea one I have to a dual motor electric jobbie, as standing is so much more comfortable (& I suspect much better for me)

We got a hag caspico at the start of the plague age. Probably fails on the not expensive front. We got a basic model that is semi padded/upholstered on the seat. They do do fully padded and standing desk models, but that definitely pushes it into expensive territory.
Can't remember what we paid for the basic now. I'd been intermittently looking at them and checking eBay for a few years as the old office got them in for people with back issues and they seemed quite good at stopping me slouching, which the aeron us non bad back folks got very much did not.

Gaming chair? Typing this from a Secret Lab chair which is very comfy. No specific lumbar support but comes with a memory foam lumbar cushion and head/neck cushion.

I got a plain black one and it looks quite professional on zoom etc.

You don't specify budget - cost is very subjective on here as I'm sure you know!

Rookie mistake, budget is up to circa 400 but less is more. Happy to go second hand too.

I've got one of these, a Humanscale Freedom....they have gone up in price a bit since I got mine though!

https://corporatespec.com/?s=humanscale+freedom&post_type=product

I suffer from hip pain, and I can stay seated in this chair all day long, and not had back ache since buying it.

If you sit back in the chair the whole thing remains in alignment with your back and head.

At first my wife found it a bit firm, but she loves it too now.

I bought a Steelcase one from 2nd hand dot com. Any of their chairs are good tbh.

Also sitting in a SecretLab chair. Considerably better now at home than in my office which doesn't increase chances of me going in on any given day.

's what I have. I love it. I spend a third of my life in it, figured it was worth an investment (see also, beds).

There was a lengthy thread on this during lockdown. I recall that https://www.2ndhnd.com/ was a popular recommendation. Good as new refurbs for a fraction of the price.

2ndhnd.com, and have a browse. Loads on there that would fit the bill.

As per above I got a G64 from 2ndhnd in summer 2020 partly based on good reviews in the office chair thread. Very good condition chair (had a couple of tiny marks on the black plastic arms) and new upholstery. Adjustable back, seat tilt, seat fore-aft and height. Better than any office chair I've had and about £120 delivered. Most of the other big makes above available from them or corporatespec as refurbished.

Edit:

I've got a Humanscale Freedom (I think) chair with headrest and leather and the fancy alu finish for sale, if you want. Sat on twice.

Then I got a herniated disk, and had to upgrade to a Hag Capisco, which would be my recommendation if you didn't want to buy my chair for a monkey (about £912.48 new).

edit: Yep, Freedom, like this with brown leather:

Noble Chairs Hero here, similar to Secret Lab but UK based so easier if you need spares ETC.

I got the 'high tech' fake leather version with the micropores that make it much less sticky in the summer, not quite as breezy as a full mesh seat but it doesn't make amusing noises when you fart.. which is the main thing when you're on a VC with the directors and have forgotten to hit mute.

After almost 2 years of constant use it's just starting to develop a tiny bit of play in the base, rock solid otherwise and it's shown clearly just how terrible the chairs we had in the office were.

The humanscale ones look good, im in the market for something under £500 idealy.

@cougar - the secretlab ones look a bit like the cheap(but not actually cheap) 'gaming chairs' you see...

...are they actually comfortable for long periods and well made? they could be an option, but the style puts me off a bit...

Thanks

EDIT, this one look ok for a good price? https://secretlab.co.uk/products/titan-evo-2022-series?sku=R22PU-Ash

Largely out of stock Not a whole lot of stock here.

Couple of recommendations for the hag capisco chair, which as I’m having back problems again could be a good bet. They don’t look that comfortable though. Not sure how this works in improving the situation and reducing back, joint, neck pain.

Largely in the same position as this, otherwise I’d be interested in the freedom chair. Good to know the hag “works” though.

@mattyfez - I have the SecretLab "softweave plus" in black and it looks just like any other office chair. I'm not sure it's quite as splash proof as the leather (or leather look alike options) but I don't think it looks cheap.

I've been using mine daily for 2 years and it's still comfortable.

Thanks, the soft weave £504 is only marginally more expensive than the fake leather trim £484, whereas the real leather trim takes the price up to just over £900, a bit spendy for me.

I guess the soft weave trim might be the 'best' option?

I have a steel case leap 2 and it's good. Nice big padded seat, very adjustable arms and great lumbar support and not too big. £250 second hand but like new.

Another vote for SecretLab here - the Titan Evo to be precise.

My experience:
Being bigger than the average person (in all three dimensions) the different size of chair within the Titan range caught my eye as being worth investigating.

I opted for the 'cookies and cream' finish and have found that this looks fine on conference calls etc. and doesn't darken the room/screen overly.

The biggest deal really is the fit and support - it's the only chair I've sat in in my adult life that has given me the sense that 'this chair fits me' and the sense of my back 'resetting' when I sat in it for the first time went on for most of the afternoon.

Just my thoughts - other folk may disagree and that's fine. 🙂

They are sold as gaming chairs. Beyond marketing I'm not quite sure what makes a chair a 'gaming chair' beyond the fact that you can get them in lairy colours or with batman (etc) logos. But I work from home so spend a third of my life in it, it took a bit of frigging about to get it set up correctly but I can't fault it. It is a world apart from the 'executive' office chair it replaced. I bought the fake leather one because I figured it was likely more catproof (and spill-proof) than the cloth and considerably less spendy than the real leather. It feels like a premium material, it's not like the faux-leather seats in a 1970s Ford.

It looks like the EVO is new this year, they've consolidated the previous model range into one chair in different sizes.

Another happy Secretlab owner - Omega 2020 model in soft weave charcoal fabric, paid £320 for it but I see they’ve increased prices and consolidated their previously 3 model line up into a single model in 3 sizes. I’m only 65kg and 5ft 6” so the omega fits me fine, super comfortable which is due to the cold formed foam structure, if your coming from an average softly padded computer chair then it seems rather hard when you first try it out but they genuinely are worthy of the numerous online YouTube reviews. When I cleaned up and teenageified my mates kids bedroom for his 13th birthday last year I bought him a cookies & cream omega as he loved mine.

I went with a Steelcase please v2 from 2ndhand.com. The back is in 2 parts so it sort of moves to fit your back. very adjustable and comfortable

I just bought a refurbished Humanscale Diffrient World, started out comfy but now seems like the mesh is sagging so that im touching the underlying chair frame and its quite uncomfortable. I'm ~77kg so not exactly a tank, that's not 'how they're meant to be' surely?
