my current watch cost £500 and has a glass bezel that is smashed. therefore dont really want to cause further damage at my new job.
will be working in a environment where i may be fitting stuff to peoples cars and working on bikes. any recommendations?
Cheap Casio.
needs to look decent!

Seiko at great prices and no import tax
Seiko SNDA57P1
Paid £117 for mine. Wear everyday and still looking as good as new.
Jam bo has it right there. I'm wearing one right now.
Change the strap, though, as the stock one is gash. TimeFactors NATO works perfectly.
Seiko SNZG15K1 for me. I like it.
hmmmm anything else?
Casio solar powered radio controlled jobbie - will never need putting to the right time or need a battery, not all of the G-shocks look terrible and they are as tough as old boots - I use mine in the office and when crawling under my Defender.
One of the less crazy Nixons?
Timex Ironman Triathlon. Mine cost me £16 quid and it survived Sandhurst, some hot, sandy places and various parts of Wales.
Am I the only to think that if your working on cars and bikes worried about damage to the watch then shouldn't you be concerned about what you may catch on what your working on.
I'd just the watch off first especially after getting my wrist caught down the side of an engine and having to shout for my wife to help.
craig, i appreciate your concern but work will be in the engine bay on occasion, and so far i havent scratched my bike whilst wearing a watch so extremely unlikely to happen, although a possible recommendation to the whole company there!
Just want something that is less expensive and less likely to break!
Hard to beat the Seiko 5s and similar, often available for £50ish on offers. Personally for that work environment it would be a gshock for me. Why not the Gw5600, style icon and super functional.
In that case get yourself a Yobokies modded Seiko. I have Seiko Military with a black PVD coating and a variety of NATO straps. Stands up to plenty of abuse and saves the Sumo from damage.
G shock.....end of
Citizen Eco-Drive.
This is mine:

... a bit over-budget but there are cheaper models.
hmmmm, Casio for £6K..........50 pieces worldwide or not, i don't think i would spend 6K on a casio.
I wear a Swatch Irony, plenty to choose from & decent enough to look smart.

£99 on Amazon - tempted myself:
Skagen. £100, looks great and mine has lasted two year (now cracked the glass). That's a year longer than anything else I've had as I seem to break watches rather quickly...

Seiko 5, like this one. Add in a couple of quid for a tan strap and you're sorted.
Another vote for a Skagen, really nice watches at reasonable prices, classy but different.
Not got one yet myself but next time I fancy a new watch it's on my list, or if I've got cash to splash a Christopher Ward.
Was gonna suggest Skagen, but not sure how they'd stand up to the scuffs and scrapes of a work environment. Great watches though.
A bit over budget, but how about a Mondaine. I keep meaning to treat myself to one:

As I said, my Skagen has lasted longer than anything else I've had by a large margin and I've had various supposedly tough watches previously.

True. I perhaps wasn't really referring to the durability of the mechanism and the strength of the strap etc. but more that the designs are often polished and quite 'dainty' for want of a better word.
I wonder how they would look after a couple of years of scuffs and scrapes compared to something that looks a bit more 'rugged' to start with?
I've got an old Accurist that is battered, but looked quite workmanlike to start with so it doesn't look out of place, whereas the Rotary that my wife got me as a wedding present is highly polished and I dread the day I get a scuff/scratch on it, as it will look more 'damaged' than just 'worn'.....
Dunno, just thinking out loud, really.....
I think I'd be going for something like that diving watch up there with the rubber strap.
I know what you mean but it's a Ti case so that could be polished (though mine doesn't really show any significant marks) and the strap is a fine mesh so that doesn't show up marks.

It's £3 above budget and possibly a bit posh but is anyone else wants a more formal watch for similar money, this looks pretty good:

I have one of these. Still going strong after six and a half years...

Chunky but smart face. A big selling point is that I kill leather straps in under a year but this rubber strap lasted four and a half years. When if wore out it cost £16 to replace and they changed the battery for free!
Just spotted this.... A bit posher and looks mint

I also use a cheap £5 Casio for riding.
