Can any one recommend a good lively vintage forum ?
For MTB? www.retrobike.co.uk is the go to, I think! In fact, it's prob the one for road as well.
Aye, RB. Be warned they're a bit anal though.
Not in the "because I really love you" way either.
Tonton if your French is OK.
Make sure your lube is period correct....
😯 😳 😆
I don't even like road bikes but this shop is just wonderful. "Artisan" bike builder. Web site is a bit so so but some lovely bikes in the gallery.

What kind of vintage bike you looking for?
Better links and photos on the facebook page
Just keep an eye on Craigslist or similar. Something will catch your eye sooner or later.
I recommend a Raleigh Bomber from the 80s - 3 speed Sturmer hub
There was a decent looking old rod braked, chain covered bike in the local recycling metal skip the other day. Once in they don't come back out 🙁
There's a nice one on Facebook, lots of decent everyday bikes not just over restored high end.
Hi and thanks
Being in France I intend to pick up something local there is a lot of choice so I want to research maybe an old Peugeot motobecane or something similar.
Plenty of gaspipe Peugeots out there with fancy sounding names for their gaspipe.
Very simple test when looking at a steel frame, take out the seat pin and feel around the inside of the seat tube, if there is a seam, leave it. If not, it might be ok.
Peugeot PX10 is the one to have from the 60s - ridden by Merckx, Tommy Simpson and many others - white frame with black/white chequerboard. The 'joys' of French bikes of that era is that many came with their own unique headset, pedal thread sizes. 650 wheel sizes also popular for touring bikes.
When do 26 inch wheels become vintage? Or do they become classic, then retro before making it to vintage?
I have been offerd a px 10

350 euro
or Motobecane https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByCz6CKoS1hpUURIT3BCUmg4RVE/view?usp=sharing
60 euros
peugeot

80 euros
If the peugeot mentions Carbolite, stay away
OP. Hard to see where you can go wrong for 60€ or 80€ ... my FIL has an old Peugeot hanging in the garage, must look and see what it is, I very much doubt he would have spent much money on anything decent even his "value shopping" approach to things.
Hi jamba, I like that attitude! Could i interest you in a fantastic vintage racing bicycle?
I agree Jamba think ill take a punt on one of the two cheaper bikes as a first foray into vintage road ...would never have dreamed of riding road in the UK but here in the French country side its a pleasure.
In one of the many races he won, Eddy Merckx broke away with a rival from the Peugeot team. The end of the race comprised a mountain climb followed by a descent to the finish. Merckx dropped the Peugeot rider on the descent. After the race he was asked why he did attack the Peugeot rider on the climb. His response was that he did not need to. Having ridden previously for Peugeot himself, he knew that their frames handled badly on descents, and that the rival simply would not be able to keep up with him.
The Peugeot frames were so bad that in the end a team manager had to buy some italian frames and cut them up, to show the Peugeot builders where they were going wrong.
Slight hijack - Is a Viscount Indy 500 retro chic or skip fodder? Or more specifically, is the one that's hanging up in my garage worth the effort of rehoming?
Viscounts tend to be worth keeping
So peugeot learnt a lesson and went on to build better frames .....I do love a happy ending 😆
That PX10 looks very nice with the Simplex gears and Mafac brakes - decent price as it would cost a lot more in frame and parts alone - you could probably move it on for a profit if nothing else. The others are nice in a retro, shabby-chic way but not really of the same league as the PX10. Depends on whether it's the right size?
Eddy merckx Corsa extra.
Peugeots are nothing special.
Most British built bikes and frames are nothing special either.
nothing wrong with carbolite, its just cheap steel is all. Be wary of PX series bikes... a lot of bikes came in that livery (I've got an old peugeot in the chequered livery hung on my wall, bought for £30).
old retro bikes are fun, I had a reynolds 535 frame bulit up with full dura ace, currently my turbo trainer bike is a Vitus peugeot, i had a nice reynolds peugeot frame that had been repainted (over the reynolds sticker) that I lent to a friend and never saw again.
old steel frames are a pleasure to ride, if y're fussy you can fit STI shifters but down tube shfters are fine once you get used to them. when i ride my carbon aero bike I feel I have to justify it to myself, so its full lycra, long, fast rides, being "pro". Old steel bikes are for pottering and dawdling and then going very very fast with poor brakes.
No, really carbolite is just the worst kind of steel frame. You can get a reasonable drawn steel frame for not much more and often the same price. Having said that, I'm not about to get into a debate about the qualities of carbolite. Just expressing a view, by all means listen to jimbobo and buy carbolite
the px 10 looks in good nick, possibly been done up? Got a reynolds 531 sticker.
Knocks spots off the other two, looks about a 53 or 54 inch frame?
Nice site.

Gitane, Urago, LeJeune are worth a look.
The PX10 has been repainted (well) does that detract from the value?
Some of you need a history lesson. Merckx rode frames hand-built to his spec from builders such as De Rosa and they were painted to team colours. They were built with Columbus tubes but had Reynolds stickers when necessary. Le Cycle go its hands on one in the 90s which from tube dimensions was Columbus SL. He hated flexible frames so has properly stiff ones built for him - one of the reasons he descended well and was confident of dropping others who were less gifted or on lighter frames. He was so keen on rigidity he preferred clips over braze ons for components and accessories as each braze weakens the tube (or did before Nivacrom and 853).
I had a classic steel Vitus but it broke beyond repair last year after 70-80 000km. The tubes were thin, it was bendy, comfortable and easier to get down a mountain than my Giant TCR composite. I won't be replacing it though, I know a few people who've had old steel frames fail catastrophically with fortunately no more than a broken collar bone or severe road rash. A fat Brit on an old steel race bike is asking for trouble but if the OP is 60s skinny, go for it - having first done an endo and bounced around on the fork.
Edit: I still have a 53.5cm 1992 Veneto Columbus Max built at the factory in Serres Castet near Pau. It was my main race bike for a while before Carbon frames equaled steel in stiffness. If you want to ride it rather than polish and admire I suggest you buy something similar rather than a 60s death trap.

I had a PX10 when they were new. Nice enough bike but I never enjoyed riding it as much as my earlier Andre Bertin* C35, which in my opinion handled better.
Plenty of these in France at bargain prices.
*(I recently bought another Bertin to restore to the same spec as I had in my youth, and a few rides have confirmed its nice handling - it's as good as my Flying Scot which used to be regarded in Scotland as the sine qua non of bikes)
Found another Peugeot that i like and a better price this is a super competition in my size 12 speed any one any thoughts ? its only 200 euro and close to me so no petrol to burn.
