Hi daughter is turning 7 soon and was hoping for a games console for her birthday. We'd prefer one that connects to the tv so we can check how much she's using it (and we can play it too!)
Does anyone have any recommendations as I've just had a look online and there seems a lot to choose from so don't really know where to start?
Wii U at that age.
Ours is approaching three years old and my three kids would still play it daily.
It plays though the tv but has a display on the game pad if you want to watch tv at the same time but keep an eye on usage.
They get loads of bad press but I think it is a great machine with some really good games.
Mario Kart, need for speed (for me) , Nintendo land ( five people can join in and play some really good, simple party games) and lots of games aimed at the younger end.
My eldest is currently hooked on xenoblade chronicles, it looks stunning.
9 yo lad loves splatoon.
14 yo daughter loves zelda hd.
PS3 probably get it cheap and plenty of games including adult ones
Wii they will grow out of fairly quickly
Mine haven't grown out of the wii u yet but I suppose it's the type of games they are going, or you want them getting into.
Yes, wii u doesn't have the range of first person shooters that ps might, but do you want a 7 yo playing them.
If dad wants some fun, then call of duty, mass effect and others are available on the wii u as a "console-ation".
I'd be curious what range of games there are for a 7yo on a PS3/4.
Cheers for the suggestions the wii u range looks more what I think she'd be into (barbie, singing etc!) just had a look and I'm wondering about going for a wii off eBay with loads of games rather than a new wii u with one game?
My 4 year old loves the Lego games on my ps4. Jurassic park, marvel superheroes etc no prostitute shooting in gta v though
Xbox one. Had mine for a year now and the lad loves it. Obviously you need to buy suitable games for the age group. We have the lego games which seem a good mix of adventure and problem solving with some humour thrown in.
We have a wii too but I find it a bit gimmicky and it's showing it's age now in terms of graphics etc.
PS4/Xbox One and turn on parental controls. Also, games have ratings from ESRB now, so that'll help you chose appropriate titles.
Both platforms have so many indie/studio games that would be ideal for a 7 year old, plus you get to play some more mature games.
Off the top of my head.
PS4:
Journey:
XboxOne:
Ori & The Blind Forest:
Child Of Light:
The wii u is way better than the wii.
We had the original and upgraded.
BTW, most of the Lego games are on wii U, with some exclusives like Lego city undercover which my kids loved and is £20 new now.
I'm not going to contribute anymore, I sound like a scratched record! 🙄

Would it not have made more sense to ask what games they played rather than have some Daily Mail type knee jerk hysteria?
Minecraft
FIFA football games x many
Lego - Lord of the rings - Star wars
Some snowboard game
Little big planet
we had a wii first and they got bored of it- its much more "childish" but it does have plenty of fun games but a PS3 will last longer IME. That is in 5 years time they will probably still play it
YMMV
I have sons and I dont know if that makes any difference
Thanks for the ideas- It's between the wii u and the xbox one now
+1 for Wii U.
My lad is 10 in Aug and loves his Wii. Him and his friends are always playing online with each other. Splatoon and Minecraft are great team player games.
I'd go for a PS4 over Xbox One....mainly for the VR stuff coming.
My two (6,4) love all the Lego games, especially Lego Worlds and all the Rayman games.
They also like playing my PC games too, Tropico 5 and 8-bit Armies get requested a lot as you get to build things. My son is turning into quite the virtual dictator when it comes to generating more tax revenue 😯
