To narrow it down I have the following requirements:

Need to be vaguely central, we’re staying up towards Marylebone but are happy to stroll/tube towards the West End
Not silly expensive, maybe up to £50 per head.
It is for a 60th birthday so somewhere that will feel a bit “special”
Ideally it would be good English or European food, as my 60 year old mother is not quite as adventurous as I am

Thanks as ever for your help.

I reckon The Wolseley, on Piccadilly would fit that. Good food, nice atmosphere, the occasional familiar face if you like that sort of thing.

One 08 Marylebone Lane is pretty nice; in fact, there are lots of nice places on Marylebone Lane and Marylebone High Street.

Oh, and if you want a snack while you're in the neighbourhood, go to the Ginger Pig in Moxon street and get one of their pies 😀

another nice one would be NOPI

You could do afternoon tea - I like the Lanesbourough hotel for that - maybe cocktails afterwards.

I was going to suggest taking her up the oxo tower, but at 60 that may not be so clever

Wild Honey on St Georges St. (between Bond & Regent St)

Top quality English food (game etc.) and wine by the 250ml carafe so should just about be able to keep it under £50 per head

Take her to Cafe Boheme, right on Old Compton St, marvelous place. French/British so lots of great steaks and fish, good atmosphere, nice staff, it's always a winner.

Or a bit more (but not stupid money if you watch on the wine) J Sheekey, fabulous fish restaraunt in theatreland. Very old school (has long been luvvie central) but a little bit glam. She will love you if you take her there. You know what....take her to Sheekey, it's her 60th and she is your mum.

Where's Flashy when you need him, eh? I bet he knows a few places...

I don't tend to do 'posh', me (too poor innit? 🙁 ), but if you're in that area for a bit, and are feeling a bit skint after splashing out for posh nosh, then you can do no better than to pop into the Indian YMCA in Fitzroy Square. Basic canteen style place, get a tray and plates type affair, no frills, but bloody hell if you like proper Indian grub you will not be dissapoint. Simple, yet delicious 'workers' food, and so cheap you can eat well for well under a tenner. In the West End. Went with a friend a couple of months ago; we had a selection of dishes and rice and shared stuff, plus a cup of tea each; came to fourteen pound something. For both of us! And we were full up.

I shall be going there again very soon. 🙂

Val Taro I think its called, at 32 Orange street off of Whitcomb Street behind the Portrait Gallery. Its a very nice Classic Itaian run by Itatian Family not posh just nice and homely, never had a dud meal there and aways paid a lot less than £50 per head!!!! incuding wine! We think its got great prices for a central London.

epic.

Hardly "Mum's 60th" territory though...

also, my wife went there about 6 months ago and said it was decidedly average... poorly cooked, dry meat drowned in plasticky sauce. I had high hopes for it from the website, but glad I didn't go.

We had a very good meal at the Criterion in Picadilly Circus earlier this year - for the same sort of budget.

Took my mum and dad - early 70's - and they loved it.

Hmm, I like Magdalen near London Bridge but that's probably a bit far for you. There's no shortage of places in Marylebone, though I don't have recent reports. Wolseley is a good stand-by.

apologies for late arrival, been rather busy. Mainly sipping rum on the beach in the Caribbean. Which is nice.

Some suggestions, none of which are too ott

Mon Plaisir. Superb French in Covent Garden
Lutyens. City noshery, but very good indeed.
Paternoster Chop House. As above.
Inn the Park. In St James's Park - British, seasonal, superb.
Boisdales. Best meat in London, and the finest collection of whiskey in town. Stick to the Belgravia one
Olivo - just about next door to Boisdales. Sardinian. Lush.

Oh, and Rules. Everyone should dine at Rules at least once.

As accurate a description of that place as I've ever heard!

Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental is very good. Should be able to do it on that budget if you don't go silly on booze. Need to book few weeks in advance though

I always like to offer a bit of closure to these kind of threads.

Ended up going to Paternosters Chop House at St Pauls. It was very, very good, great food, superb service and not as expensive as I thought it would be. Highly recommended. It was a bit of a pain to find as the square is closed due to the OLSX group and the sommerlier said it was very quiet because of this.

So thanks CFH.

We also had a pre-theatre meal at Pierre Victoire neat Tottenham Court Road which was also very good and worth a visit.

Can't remeber the Beast of the Day, but I do know I had an outstanding piece of beef rib. Both parents were also suitably impressed which is really the important thing.

Durrants is a bit posh, but very nice. It has a small, cosy restaurant that serves great food. I went there for a business/work thing several years ago now. But's all fresh food and nicely done. You might need to book first. Website is - http://www.durrantshotel.co.uk/the_restaurant.html

It's off the back of Oxford Street.
