After some accommodation for 4 nights in early July - needs to be nearish to the action but preferably quiet (I know, moon on a stick) and reasonably cheap if poss, and friendly. Guest houses are fine, as are nicer hostels and small hotels. Also, any must-dos/eateries that aren't necessarily obvious or in the guide books? We like to get off the beaten track a bit. Ta v much.
Last time I was in Istanbul I stayed in a lovely wee place off Zurafa Sokak (Zurafa Street). I can't remember the name, I don't think it had a sign, but it was fantastic. Service was absolutely outstanding, they really went the extra mile, a memorable stay.
nearish to the action
Which action do you mean? Sultanahmet for history, cafes, museums. Taksim for foods and drinks and musical instruments. It's not too hard getting from one to the other but best to know which side of the Golden Horn you're going to be spending more time in.
Recommend being up the Galata Tower as the call to prayer kicks off.
Make sure it's Istanbul, not Constantinople... 😀

Apparently lots of action.
