In a recent bid to add some zip to my cheese sandwiches, I have decided to add some piccalilli. Not really having partaken in it before, I used the STW adage of the more expensive it is the better it must be. So I bought a jar of this:
However, on testing today, it's tasty but that's about it it. It's all a bit bland, and I was hoping for a stronger mustard/pickly flavour. It's basically the Tim Henman of condiments. Very agreeable, but nothing to get your heart racing.
What other store bought options should I try? Near several supermarkets, so branded/own brand suggestions fine.
...or should I just stick with mustard?
I'm pretty sure theres no such thing as a bad piccalilli.
Yes there is.
Sweet picallilli bleurgh

He knows what he's talking about. I prefer sweet piccalilli myself. With honey works well:

I never said it was bad, more it wasn't very strong. Which I kinda expected anything with a mustard/pickled onion base to have a bit more of a kick.

You have to get yourself in a 70's mindset. That jar in the OP is too opaque, has too much substance to it. Think yellow translucent piccalilli, yellow translucent lemon curd, yellow translucent lift lemon tea. If you're coming to this with high expectations you'll only be disappointed - piccalilli, white bread and white meat. Liverbirds on the telly, 3 day weeks, candles in the kitchen drawer ready for the blackouts.
