You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'll be WFH or in client offices, sometimes in UK and sometimes abroad
Main criteria are:
Reliable - doesn't fail or fall apart
Quick to fire up
Reasonably quick - but only running Microsoft Office, no specialist software
Lightweight but robust - I'll be carrying it in my bag several days a week, including flying maybe once a month
Reasonable memory for storage
Not too expensive - £500?
I have a Dell Inspiron for personal use which has been pretty good over the 4+ years since I bought it but their business PCs look heavy at 5lbs
John Lewis have a Samsung which has good reviews, although they suggest it's a little slow.
Thoughts?
You might need to post the models not just the brand.
No reason you need a business dell, the personal ones do office just fine. I picked two up out of their clearance store.
2nd hand thinkpad with an SSD in it - I would have said new thinkpad, but your price requirement rules that out. X series will be the most portable.
What cranberry said. t series t420 or 430 or the x series like 220 with a good i5 cpu minimum
Thirded.
Thinkpads are our standard issue at work, they're relatively difficult to kill (though Rick Cook's quote about idiot-proof systems is still largely applicable).
For self employed use
Ooooh errrr, portable device eh, fnarrr fnarrr 😆
I'm in the market for a similar solution.
Lenovo Thinkpads seem to be getting some love, so what does the STW Geek-Squad think of this? Lenovo Thinkpad X201
I'll mainly be using it for Illustrator/Photoshop doodlings and web/watching stuff. Good deal?
x201 looks bargain but i cant remember why but think there was something about the x201 not so good, but the x220 would get my money or the t420.
Carefull though they are refurb so doubt they be shiny new looking.
I would be confirming whether that 4Gb is 1x 4Gb stick or 2x 2Gbs, if you're doing Photoshoppery.
Thinkpad or Macbook Air
Maybe over budget, but if you want bombproof you should pay for it.
Look for an i5 Dell XPS 15 on the dell outlet.
Metal chassis, nice and slim, full HD screen.
Let me know where you can get a Macbook Air for £500, I'll have one myself.
