Our ancient shredder has died..
Can you please share your recommendations for one of those modern shredders that cut horizontal and vertically?
Under £40 and not huge would be ideal
The choice is bewildering

Chugs along merrily, but 6 sheets is a bit ambitious, 4 is quicker. Its lasted much longer than previous larger supposedly better machines. For under 40 quid, you might struggle to get a 6 sheet plus, reliable shredder.
May wood burning stove seems to be the best way I have found for getting rid of confidential documents
Having gone through a few we paid a bit more and got one that takes 11 sheets.
We don't feed it with 10 sheets though.
Had it +8 years.

Fellowes P48C or equivalent. It's been flawless. A little over budget - it was cheaper when I bought mine. If looking now, I'd get a thin, deep one for under desk use to sit it out of the way.

We do have a woodburner but we only feed it organic, cave aged native species sourced from a local atelier du wood. Their limited edition artisanal kindling is epic

Old washing machine drum on its back in the garden. Fill with paper. Pour old engine oil over the contents. Set ablaze. Job jobbed.
Possibly best after dark.

I bought some hydrochloric acid and a big tub. I haven't worked up the courage to do the deed yet. Also need to find my acid safe coat first (and the rest). Also wondering where the heck to pour the stuff out afterwards. I'll give it a go once and if it is poop then buy a fire burner thingy.
I started burning docs in a garden incinerator. Loads of white smoke so I stopped that pretty quick. But then, I wasn't using old engine oil as an accelerant 😄

If you don't have a woodburner, or old washing machine drum, and can't bring yourself to pollute the atmosphere with burning old engine oil, you can just use a simple metal bucket to safely cremate those old personal documents in.

You're just setting yourself up for having your whole identity laboriously stolen by council employees who will carefully re-constitute your shredded documents over the course of many months.
Total destruction by engine oil or terrifying acids is the only way.
But, you know, your choice.
Wood burner here, I did a return at ikea the receipt was about a foot long and three part, loads of receipts to keep me warm.

Check your local authority recycling rules. Ours don't take shredded paper. It's hard to separate manually and automatedly [sp]. The missus shreds ours and is bagged up and burnt by the MiL.
