Heading to Hong Kong in October - want to tack on an extra week somewhere in SE Asia for a spa/resort sort of holiday. Will have mother-in-law along too, so no need for partying. I have a free pass to go cycling (altho securing a decent bike might be hard).
Any suggestions?
pick a resort on any island you can't go wrong.the tourism there is endless, i spent six months and only marked the surface never mind scratched. keep an eye on the weather around october , is this season change time?
i wouldn't even look about biking personally but bali has a good scene as does philippines but way too far from hong kong. the heat and sun , humidity and mozzies, remoteness would put me off biking.
trip advisor and lonely planet are a good guide. id recommend a spa resort in cambodia , see angkor wat. do the beach tourist stuff. its cheap to do , but still very poor and 3rd worldly so be prepared for the culture shock, though if your hong kong based you know the story.
Good thinking on Cambodia.
Any more for any more?
Good riding in Chiang Mai
Vietnam. If you want a mix of beach and history go to Hoi An. I like Victoria Resort hotel (small chain) but its 10 years since I stayed in tne Hoi An one. For more history/tourism you could do Hanoi / Sapa / Ha Long Bay.
Cambodia is great, esp Angkor Wat / Siem Reep.
Bali is very nice for a resort type holiday. Kuta is a bit chavvy, the Antipodean take on Ibiza, but the further up the coast you go the nicer it is. We based ourselves in Seminyak, which was lovely, and ventured out to the likes of Ubud, Sanur and Legian to see a little bit of the island. You're also well placed for trips to the Gili Islands, which are another kettle of fish altogether.
Edit: just noticed jamba has mentioned Hoi An. Out of everywhere I've ever been, it's in my top 5. Absolutely mesmerising place.
Cambodia is a great place but can be difficult to travel around. Angkor Wat is north in Siem Reap and you need at least 2 days there. Vietnam is excellent and well worth the visit same as Bali and as been suggested keep away from Kuta.
How old is MiL, and how much, if at all, would she enjoy schlepping around on flights? Assuming you're in the UK, it's already quite a trek, and adding on more could need some thought. Especially when some SE Asian airlines aren't all that enjoyable!
If you need/want any tips for HKG itself, do let me know!
Southern tiny Island of Jedu off South Korea is really nice too.
Good Spa, relax place.
Although not sure of temp in Oct.
Also, if it's the 1st week in Oct. It's Chinese National Holiday, and they will be travelling as well.
Better to choose harder to get Visa places otherwise it will be busy.
