my laptop is buggered at present (only goes to log in page and no further).

tried restart/shift to get options for command prompt system restore e.t.c but when i try to click any of them it just goes to a black screen/nothing happens.windows 8.1 btw.

can anyone recommend me a boot time scan free that i can download from library to a usb stick that will auto run when i switch on the laptop?

thanks.

I'd just create a windows 8.1 (or any version, tbh) boot disk as a starting point and see if it'll boot off that. You can at least check everything is working ok.

Doesn't sound much like a virus tbh, more that you've managed to break the installation itself... Does the laptop have a valid serial code on the bottom? (The windows sticker) If it does you can legally download a copy of Windows and use that, there's no need to buy another copy.

you should be able to create a boot disk from any other pc (which you'd need access to do do the virus thing)?

I have used Hiren a few times to get rid of nasties on other peoples machines.

Loads of tools built into it.

Have you tried hammering away at F8 on start up to try and get into the boot menu?

Do that, repair, chkdsk.

W8 doesn't come with a serial number sticker ("CoA") as it's tied to an identifier string in the BIOS instead; you shouldn't need to buy it again. Push comes to shove you should be able to reinstall it from the F8 menu.
