Its for my parents:

Basically they want something with good zoom and fast shutter speeds - they want to use it to take pics of their dogs when they are outside working so want to zoom into their faces. I was thinking 12 optical zoom maybe.

Not with AA batteries and preferably SD card for ease of uploading into their SD card slot on their laptop.

I said DSLR but they said they are to bulky to carry around, I have a D40 and they tried that but felt it too big to carry on walks etc.

I got my parents a Panasonic Lumix FS-7 for xmas, seems really easy to use on auto and produces some good quality pics.

I got my Mum a Canon Powershot SX 120IS for Christmas, it's a nice little camera, 10x zoom, fast enough and very easy to use but it probably fails your requirements since it uses AA batteries.

If I was in the market more a new compact, i'd look at a Canon S90.

Seems good on paper.

If you want something with DSLR type functionality but not the bulk you could look at the Canon G9/10/11 or whatever they are up to now.

Panasonic DMC-TZ7 is the normal answer, it ticks all your boxes, 12x zoom, SD card, rechargeable battery, reasonably small and takes good pcitures.

I have last years TZ5 and apart from missing manual mode on occasion when I want to add some depth to the field of View its a damm good camera.

I bought mine from Camerabox, and I bought another 6 cameras for my grandchildren this Christmas from them and they've been brilliant.

Cheers Pepper - tz7 looks the best but i think she is settling on the tz6 12x zoom etc but only missing out on the hd video and 3" screen.

220 at our local dept store and 270 at jessops - think they need to look at their prices. She is getting it later so will have a play.

I'm looking to get a compact for a friend, and she wants a rapid frame rate (having played with my DSLR) and a viewfinder...

Dont think there are many left with viewfinders now.

I get the same with my dslr - my mates say I want a camera like that but in a compact body...... I say get a dslr then!

Had an argument with my brother in law that his compact 7mp compact was better than my dslr - i had to walk away and leave him in his delusional state, cock!

no, you're right - and I think it's highly retrograde to be looking at a screen instead of the actual scene (perceptually) 🙁

my mates say I want a camera like that but in a compact body

I used to think DSLRs were so big to make you feel you were getting your money's worth, but I think we can take it as read that if the manufacturers could fit that kind of functionality into a much smaller body they would! I'm also alarmed that some of the higher specced compacts and bridge cameras are as expensive as a proper DSLR!

Think canon are the only compacts with viewfinders. I did have a ricoh with an attachable one but that was a bit large to be a compact. The s90 has ne viewfinder the G11 does as do there lesser compacts.

Depends on your priorities though surely. You are happy carrying around a bulky SLR camera - but lots of people aren't. No point having an amazing camera if you can't be arsed taking it out with you half the time.

Lumix TZ6 - about £170. I am toying with the idea of getting one as a pocket camera at the moment, though if I could find the funds the Canon S90 would happen. May hold off and see about getting one of them on the company 😉

Though I also have an inkling for an Olympus PEN with the 17mm pancake lens.....

I've got an Olympus mju with a viewfinder. Not new, and it's looking for a good home if anyone's interested. Be a lot cheaper than what's mentioned above, and works perfectly satisfactorily for a casual usuage camera.

The Lumix GL-1 is a DSLR in a compact body, ie it has a proper DSLR sensor, rather than the much smaller type found in compacts, plus it has interchangable lenses, and you can get a full electronic viewfinder to slot into the hotshoe, as well as using the screen. Bit pricy, tho'.

I am swinging between the LX3 and S90 now... I like the idea of a wider angle lens...

Dammit!

Vat up 2.5%... not going to make a huge difference to prices really 😉

Nope, VAT change isn't going to make a real difference, but it's the only thing that I say about where prices are going!

the video on the lx3 is pretty good too: [url=
