Mrs D fancies a coffee percolator. Boring I know but hey, I am not one to argue. I ordered a Russell Hobbs one but in a design oversight it automatically turns off after 40 mins making the whole point of brewing a jug of coffee to revisit until empty is rendered pointless.

So can anyone suggest a good un without this ‘features’.

Melitta Look IV

Thermos flask keeps it warm for hours without stewing it. Brilliant.

Are you sure you mean a percolator? Or do you mean a filter machine?

If you don't have enough people drinking it to be empty after 40minutes you don't need a machine that big ( or you have no tastebuds or you are American and like absolutely rotten diner coffee)

From his description it doesn't sound like he meant a percolator.

Agreed but as its a present request I thought it better to actually clarify that point just incase an awkward christmas morning.

I personally think the OP should tell his other half she doesn't need one and just to get an aeropress...

AP is great but not if volume of coffee is required. I'm a fan of the clever dripper.

I’ll second the Melitta Look, we got one at the start of lockdown after getting back into filter coffee and not loving the hot plate. It’s great.

I set the timer to start it going at 6:30 every weekday morning, on days I go for a run I have my first cup at 8ish and it’s still piping hot. We often have our second cup after Mrs P has dropped the kids at school and been shop so sometimes after 10 and it’s still hot enough.

If there’s not much difference in price I’d have the new V model purely for the removable water tank but last time I looked there was nearly £100 difference and it’s not that much of an issue.

Perhaps someone could educate me on the difference between a percolator and a filler machine!

But yes, either way I mean one of those machines that you put ground coffee in the top and coffee appears in a jug underneath.

As for the taste, listen not my call. Mrs D wants one so that’s that. The one I ordered is particularly useless though. Even after 20 mins the coffee was barely lukewarm.

Edit: and been there done that with Nespresso, Aeropress, plunger jug things etc. She wants a filter machine 🙂

Aah right. Filter coffee. Fine.

A percolator is a flashback from the eighties. It recicrulates the cooked coffe back through the grounds endlessly when you turn it on. My parent had one, and though I never had any coffee from it, I imagine it tasted rank.

A percolater is a coffee pot that forces water up a central tube and sprays it over the coffee sittinhigh up in a filter. The coffee drips back into the pot part where it gets forced back up the tube and passed through the coffee again, rinse and repeat until you get the strength of coffee you want.

No specific recommendations without knowing your budget, but I'd second the above advice to get one with a an insulated carafe. A coffee machine with a hot plate is basically just a really crap room heater that also ruins your coffee.

In the mean time, microwaving cold black coffee doesn't seem to ruin it.

An alternative idea would be to carry on with the one you’ve got, but wallop the brewed coffee into a flask as soon as it’s finished brewing.

Or just get an espresso machine/ bean to cup and use the espresso to make an american each time fresh.

Eew no Americanos are the worst of both worlds. Filter coffee is delicious, I’d never be without a filter machine now.

How much do you want to spend? These are apparently the dogs danglies:

Whatever you get, I think it's best to get the vacuum flask so it keeps the coffee warm without burning it.

Edit: There was a PSA on here recently, 25% off Sage. Not sure if it's still valid.

I've got the Melitta Look IV as well. The thermos is great, I made my pot at 9am, just poured my second cup at 11:30 and it was too hot to drink still. The timer function works nicely and I just make as much as i need, usually 2/3 bug mugs worth. If i want one mug i pull out the aeropress
My sister now owns two, one for work and one at home.
The Sage is cool, but expensive. It hasn't taken me long to get a handle on making good coffee with the Melitta, varying strengths based on the coffee going in

Melitta Look IV here as well. The only thing we changed was adding a metal sieve filter so we didn't need to keep using disposable paper filters.

I've had a Melitta Therm for a few years, its great.
Timer is a wonderful thing, waking to freshly brewed coffee, stays hot for hours.

Moccamaster is a better looking machine, that has a lot of fans, but no timer function so ruled it out for me, cant be waiting at 7am

Thanks all. I have ordered that Melitta. Love 'em or hate 'em Amazon do make returns so easy. The replacement is on its way even before I have sent to old one back so hopefully Mrs D will be enjoying the finest filtered coffee in but a da or two 🙂
