Youngest son wants a phone for Christmas - well actually he wants a camera and to be able to text me, a cheap phone seems the obvious option. The plan is for him to use it without a SIM (ie he will use some app over Wifi to text me - obvious option seems to be Messenger Kids).

Any recommendations for something cheap with a decent (doesn't have to be superb) camera and OK performance - he'll probably get a SIM next year.

Have a look on Hotukdeals, different stuff comes up daily so it's difficult to recommend something specific as a price cut could change what's "best".

Got a Moto G5 recently. Really pleased with it, not that I'm at all techy but it does seem a decent phone for the money.
Got it from a second hand site on Amazon for about £80. It was in A condition and was supposedly not second hand as such, just returned by someone who changed their mind. I'm the suspicious sort but I'm inclined to believe them as it really does look unused. Anyway, perhaps worth a look at a second hand one.

Should have mentioned budget - less than £100 and preferably less than £80, which seems to be where other people are thinking anyway.

How does that work? Are you not committed for 12 months? Looks like I can get one SIM free for £80 which may be a better bet as it gives flexibility when it comes time to get a SIM.
