So, you Hi-Fi buffs.
I'm spending more time at home due to injury and I've just discovered that my CD player which has languished unused for a few years has decided not to play music.
I have no desire to spend megabucks, I'm not sufficiently competent at listening to music to want to upgrade the rest of the system, which on testing yesterday is still working OK.
Amp is a Mission Cyrus 2, playing through Mission 761 speakers. The CD player that has stopped working is a NAD 5425.
I'm after a simple, single CD player with analogue output. I have other means of playing streamed/downloaded music so don't necessarily need to future proof it.
Budget is up to a couple of hundred quid, and given the right argument, would spend that on a quality used player.
This has been done a few times and I always suggest the same thing.
Look for a s/h Arcam FMJ DVD player on Ebay. I picked up one for £100 and it was as good as a £500 Rega Apollo.
Why analogue out, out of interest? Lack of inputs on the amp? Seems a bit of a waste to me to pump £200 on a CD player and shove it down a pair of phono connections.

The Cyrus will have only analogue inputs.
Cougar.... because the Amp is a 1990 Cyrus2. 1990s analogue. I don't listen to enough music to want to upgrade my entire system, but I do want to listen to what I have got. If eBay bargains are the way to go then so be it. The budget was simply based on what I've got to spare, no other criteria.
What would you recommend?

I helped a friend buy his first budget CD player, although some years ago, but I was very impressed with the NAD player and my friend ended up buying that one as opposed to the other two we auditioned.

Fair enough, as you were. (-:
Our usage is quite different I think. Primarily my amp is an AV receiver and playing music is a secondary function.
In your situation and given that you already have a means of playing downloaded music, I think my advice would be "rip all your CDs and put them in a box in the loft." Either that or Spotify (which is what I ended up doing).
At the end of the day I could listen to the CDs through the 5:1 cinema system, and listen to ripped or downloaded music via the desktop, or via the phone/iPod and TV soundbar....they're all great quality, but I just had a whimsical notion that I could set up the system as it used to be. It was a wedding present (or at least put together and bought with money we were given) and gave many hours of listening pleasure. In this day of compressed MP whatever files, I'd quite like to listen to the CDs as they were originally presented.
Thanks for the suggestions..... from what I've read the BEE NAD systems are supposed to be quality kit, after all, I didn't pick NAD without doing a bit of reading and taking expert advice in the first place, but some models have a reputation for breaking carriers and needing new lazers... a refurbished one might be a good bet, and I can put the rest of the budget towards a Hope crank.
