A good beanie is indispensable. But lots of beanies are rubbish. Sadly I lost my beloved Lab Gear one several years ago and have never found a replacement that lives up to it. Here are my criteria; what fits?

- Enough length for full ear coverage, but not with a roll-up/down bit

- Dense enough to largely keep wind out, but not with an actual windproof layer

- Plain appearance, ideally charcoal grey, but not so minimal as to look like a skull cap

- NO BOBBLE

Ta 🙂

Look at the North Face ones, I had a good one then promptly lost it straight-away. Need to buy a new one to replace it

The Alpkit ones are good too, but a bit more bold than you're looking for

Google wonkie woolies, bobbles do feature but there are bobble less options, not cheap, but handmade in Scotland out of wool (as opposed to acrylic, which is now satan’s Sperm!)

I have two favourite ones.

Mountain Equipment - wool, but with fleece band around the bottom. No turn up. Nice coverage. Just works.

I've had an On One merino beanie for a few years now - it's been brilliant.

Damn fine beanies. Single layer, not too tight. I've still got one left after losing one. The only drawback is the logo holds moisture if you're working hard and you get a cold spot on your forehead! The Alpkit Fuego is not a bad substitute IMO but sold out at the moment. Sorry, not any help but I'll be watching for suggestions, I've loads of beanies but mostly too warm/tight/double layered etc.

I have  drawer full of them (freebies from an old job!) and the best of them by a mile is from Schöffel. Fleece lining over the ears, wool everywhere else, so,it's toasty without overheating.

Ussen Baltic Hat. Quite dense, and very warm. Long enough to cover my ears or fold up etc. Available in nice plain colours, grey or green etc.

There's also the Ussen Flight Hat, it is a bit thinner, maybe more useful if not actually freezing cold.

My everyday hat is a Dakine ribbed beanie, very soft and comfortable and not too warm for working in.  Haven't been able to find a similar replacement by Dakine.  My best hat is a merino and possum fur beanie, very, very soft and warm but too nice for everyday use and probably too warm for working in.  But it is soooo soft.

Another vote for Mountain Equipment ones. When I inevitably lose them I just buy another. The fleece headband lining in awesomz

i have a finisterre one, in bright yellow  https://finisterre.com/products/fisherman-beanie-gorse?variant=12141731905610  . Doesn't fulfil your no turn up bit, but recommend what you have and all that

bit of a trendy label, but i get an itchy head with a normal wool one,and this I can wear for hours. And - in my defence - i got it at half price, so it wasn't too bad.

Colour takes a bit of getting used to though. At least the family can spot me a mile off now.

the best of them by a mile is from Schöffel.

Do they do gloves?

I fancy a five finger Schöffel

the Acrylic watch hat. warm, comfy, loads of colours and yours for £20

or if youre feeling flush, wonkie woolies are the best. just take scissors to the bobble!

Best one I ever had was a Triumph one that my wife accidently washed too hot. It became slightly felted and was epically good!

Now my favourite is a plain black merino one from Adventure Austria, it was a gift. It's very breathable which is why it's nice to wear, but it's not very windproof so cold ride on the bike can be too chilly (I ride with the dog without a helmet on). Has a very simple logo in white of a couple of mountains
