For my wife’s 40th birthday present.
(Her real present is a holiday which has had to be postponed for a year).

She likes barbecuing when we go to the beach or away in the caravan so a nice portable one should make a nice temporary present 😀

The Weber Smokey Joe Premium is inevitably the first thing a google search throws up. What else should I consider?

Another vote for a Cobb. I bought one after being served a full roast chicken dinner between laps at Twentyfour12 🙂

They come into their own if you use the dedicated fuel as they are ready to cook in 5 minutes, the only thing I would say is they are more of an oven than A BBQ, they do an open BBQ plate now which gives a more intense heat for 'lid off' cooking.

They are also cool to touch so you can use it anywhere, we've used it on a canal boat and wooden benches and you can move it during cooking.

We have a Weber Go Anywhere. It lives up to its name.

If you use the Weber briquettes and a chimney it's ready to cook in 20 minutes. Shut the vents after cooking and the whole thing is cool and ready to carry away in less that an hour, and most of the charcoal inside is still useable for another cook or two.

Pork chops get done on ours all year round, home or away.

The Go Anywhere gas is a thing of wonder. Wife got one for her 40th, oddly enough, and we’ve used it loads.

Another vote here for the Cobb. We've managed to do everything from Curries, standard bbq fare such as Burgers etc (it doesn't dry meat out when it cooks) to full roast Chicken/Lamb/Beef and roast potatoes on ours.

Had ours for 12 years and its still going strong

We have a Smokey Joe, but was getting to be a pain for a daily use after the beach, we bought an Anevay Horizon rocket stove, use wood as a fuel and just take a frying pan or hot plate and there's only that to clean.

I have a Cobb and I like it. However, it isn't very good as an actual BBQ.

have a look at cadacs, they may suit you more from a BBQ perspective.

we looked into all this years back for camping and plumped for the cadac and were pleased we did, it had plenty of use. lots of accessories, skottel, paella dish, reversible griddle/hot plate, and a BBQ rack too. oh and a kettle stand. it also packs away neatly to save space.

whereas we thought the cobb would be a great bit of kit for roast meals etc, we found the cadac great for bacon/sausages/eggs in the morning, then BBQ in the evenings.

from memory was cheaper than a cobb, not sure if thats still the case.

I’ve had a Weber Go Anywhere for about 5 years and agree with all the enthusiastic comments above. It’s great as a bbq (!) and it takes up little space because it’s rectangular. I’ve been using it as a main bbq for our family of 3.

Thank god, someone with some sense. Cobbs are great slow cookers but shit at actual bbqing.

Thanks. I’ve gone for a Go Anywhere and one of the charcoal teapots or whatever they’re called.

*bit late obviously, anyway cadac safari chef, it is gas, but it does offer a lot of cooking options and it packs pretty well

Go anywhere. We’ve given up using our ‘big’ Weber as the go just works

We’ve got a cadac safari, great little camping gas grill. Can use it for loads of stuff.

I’ve recently seen a Solo Stove Bonfire, which looks nice for camping fires - but it’s pretty spendy so be good to hear if anybody has used one?

Another go anywhere here. Had mine well over 10 years. It’s lived outside in the rain, snow and sun year round and is still in fine condition. It’s been all over Europe and the U.K. My only slight gripe is that it takes a while to cool if you want to get on your way after eating.

As above it’s used as our home bbq (just two of us here) by placing it in a shelf I’ve built onto a garden wall. In fact, it’s been on three times in the last week!

That go anywhere looks great, do you need the chimney thing or can you just open the air vents? I’m not the most experienced bbq’er. How quickly could you be cooking?

If the “teapot” is a Weber chimney starter then check for sharp edges on it. Damn near took the top of my finger off !

I know it's a silly question but I really can't decide between a Go Anywhere or a Safari Chef. I love using charcoal but I seems such a waste/faff for a family of 3.

It's just getting hot and we have finished eating.

Maybe it's like bikes and I just need both!

Depends how portable you want it - but you wouldn't go wrong with a Weber Q1200.
I have the larger Q3200 which is very good.

We've had a Cobb for 6 years and they're pretty good but they're not a real BBQ. As others have said, if you use Cobblestones they're very good but with normal coal briquettes they're slow. (Aussie Heat Beads are probably the best briquette we've used).

I think the trick is to plan ahead. If you get back after a big day on the hills and want quick food, you'll be disappointed.

We're now looking at a Cadac Safari to give us more flexibility around mealtimes.

Weber Go Anywhere here too, I love it.

They used them on MasterChef too so they must be good 🙂

Get a small chimney starter too. BBQ is rubbish without one.

Funnily enough we just pulled the trigger on a cadac safari gas camping BBQ after being impressed by our friend's camping gaz version of the same thing. Went with the cadac because of the compatibility with threaded gas cartridges and the leg arrangement looks a lot better. However the camping gaz ones are cheap on Amazon at present.
Looking forward to using it!

PS rationale for gas camping BBQ in first place is it being usable right away, and lack of mess /faff. Also they are very versatile and can take the place of a stove and some of a cook set. I do like using charcoal at home, but need more time obviously. When we're camping we like to be out and about doing stuff rather than lounging about the tent or faffing on with coals /mess

Cobb here. When camping for two weeks last year, I just used lump wood charcoal. Much quicker to heat up than briquettes, obviously doesn't last as long but you don't always need 2 hours of heat.

Go Anywhere here.

Going to cut the grate in half for some roasting next. it also allows the starter to fit into the bbq fr transport, then you can get everythign you need for lighting and fueling inside it.

I'm not really convinced that its taht much slower than gas 20 minutes the coals are scorchio. Gas barbeques have to heat up aswell so its a saving of less than 20 minutes.
