I'll be over in Ireland soon and fancy some sea fishing off the rocks - it's something I used to do quite a bit when I was younger, but I've barely cast a line in 10 years. How much does a half-decent rod and reel set you back these days?
It would just be for occasional use - trips to Ireland mainly, realistically I can't see myself doing much over here (live in Manchester) but you never know. So not worth a big investment but something usable that would last for years would be nice to have.
The fishing I'd be doing is with spinners, massive cast out then reel it back in sort of thing - catch mackerel and pollock mainly off the rocks round Sligo way.

there is a load to choose from but something like this would be perfect, then find a reel that would suit you. i would recomend fixed spool if you havnt fished with a multiplier. plus they are easier to maintain (wash with fresh water, spary inners with wd40, allow to dry, put away... worked for mine!) hth

I'd disagree with that in some ways.. that's a hefty beach rod for punching large weights out towards the horizon.. ok for a hefty rig with loads of feathers perhaps..

I'd prefer a lighter rod for a sportier type of fishing in that situation.. especially for retrieving spinners.. a stout carp or bass rod perhaps, something rated for leads up to about 4ozs that will give you a bit more contact with the fish..

that's just a personal preference though..

I do agree with yunki. I only own a 3oz cast bass rod now. however the rod in the link was mostly for the travel aspect, I have a friend who uses something similar for traveling with.... there are (i think) lighter rods of a similar style avaliable.

Thanks for the advice. Collapsible would be a nice feature thinking about it - I'll take a look around the one in daftvader's link and see what's similar.

Decathlon does decent fishing gear, at decent prices too.
Sort of thing I'd be looking for, maybe a slightly longer one though....
