Watched The Host and Welcome To Dongmakgol(quite good) this week, what else out there is worth watching?
Old boy. truely disturbing but thoroughly enthralling!
Yep forgot about Old boy, watched that one a few years ago, and yep truly disturbing twist.
Premonition. NOT the one with Sandra Bullock, but the Japanese film of the same (translated) name
Old Boy Is truly amazing
Also check out Brotherhood which is korean and puts Private Ryan to shame.
Internal Affairs , Itchi and Battle Royale.
Not Asian but City Of God is probably my favourite all time movie and closer to home Life is beautiful and Amelie are stunning.
Not exactly quirky but - 'Sympathy For Mr Vengeance' is an excellent South Korean film.
The Audition
The Ring
Dark Water
Thirst
Infernal Affairs
Zatoichi
Ip Man
Fearless
Shaolin Soccer
Kung Fu Hustle
Ichi The Killer
Another +1 for old boy (plus other two in trilogy), battle royale, original 'the eye' is decent. Was hoping Thirst would b better but ok...
The Bow, R point, tetsuo-the ironman, I'm a cyborg but that's ok, Lady Vengeance, Dumplings, Acacia.
Have a look at the "tartan video asia extreme" website as well
Old Boy is part of the vengeance trilogy - sympathy for mr vengeance, lady vengeance, old boy - all wicked
3 Iron
Audition
Manga stuff (Akira, Ghost in the shell etc)
Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Kikis etc..)
Bad Guy
Kim ki Duk is a good starting point for your Korean stuff, somebody like Miike for the Japanese films
Sweet, quite a lot up there I've not seen.
Akira and ghost in the shell for sure.
You've seen death note and it's sequel I take it?
Uzumaki is worth a look.
If you liked Old Boy then Park-chan Wook's Sympathy for Mr Vengance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance should be on your list to complete the trilogy.
Anything by Takashi Miike is certainly "quirky"... try Audition to start with and if you like that go for Imprint.
Three Extremes made me permanently wary of Dim Sum and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone 😉
oh, and [url=
Girl is a riot.
Yep seen Death note(on Film 4) but not the sequel.
Lol, yep watched Machine Girl not too long ago 😀
Not seen Tokyo Gore Police yet but I've heard it's equally ridiculous/amazing.
The Sword Of Alexander (aka Taitei no ken) is funny as hell, fairly recent.
Watch some of the classics like Seven Samuri & Yojimbo
I never watched the others in the [oldboy]trilogy. I MUST watch these!
+1 for Shaolin Soccer, best is the chinese subtitled version (uncut) its a naked gun type film and is quality
Find Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter...and Spring., and watch it. It's very good.
Kurosawa
Stunning theatre in the film Ran. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089881/
Also have a romp through Stephen Chow's back catatlogue:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Chow
God of Cookery for one is literally a masterclass 😀
Thread closed.
Good Bye, Dragon Inn.
battleroyale
but not battleroyale 2, it was sh1te
From Japan, Tampopo and Hana-bi.
Shutter is good There's one about a hotel too but can't remeber what it was called. Was in the After Dark festival a couple of years ago though.
Japan-Audition, Ai No Corrida and Bad Cop
Another vote for Battle Royale - watch Japanese school girls blow each other away with Uzis.
On the Other Quirky list how about Delicatessen ?
Same director as the Amelie but without the vile slushiness.
the eye
kikujiro
that korean one with the river monster.
Jin Roh, If you can get hold of the subtitled version, the dub is awful.
Realm of the Senses: The lights in the cinema went up just after the bit where she emasculates her dead lover.......cinema was full of guys weeping on their partners shoulders.....!
If you liked Welcome To Dongmakgol then try "Turtles are surprisingly fast swimmers"
Another one for the "other quirky foreign" pile: [url=
v Tumane
It's a Russian animation from 1975, very basic, but hauntingly beautiful. I just wish I could find a non-YouTube, high quality version of it.
Chung King Express is ace, but don't watch if you dislike the Mamas N Papas California Dreaming!
