Old Boy Is truly amazing
Also check out Brotherhood which is korean and puts Private Ryan to shame.
Internal Affairs , Itchi and Battle Royale.

Not Asian but City Of God is probably my favourite all time movie and closer to home Life is beautiful and Amelie are stunning.

Not exactly quirky but - 'Sympathy For Mr Vengeance' is an excellent South Korean film.

The Bow, R point, tetsuo-the ironman, I'm a cyborg but that's ok, Lady Vengeance, Dumplings, Acacia.

Old Boy is part of the vengeance trilogy - sympathy for mr vengeance, lady vengeance, old boy - all wicked
3 Iron
Audition
Manga stuff (Akira, Ghost in the shell etc)
Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Kikis etc..)
Bad Guy

Kim ki Duk is a good starting point for your Korean stuff, somebody like Miike for the Japanese films

Uzumaki is worth a look.

If you liked Old Boy then Park-chan Wook's Sympathy for Mr Vengance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance should be on your list to complete the trilogy.

Anything by Takashi Miike is certainly "quirky"... try Audition to start with and if you like that go for Imprint.

Three Extremes made me permanently wary of Dim Sum and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone 😉

oh, and [url=

Girl is a riot.

Not seen Tokyo Gore Police yet but I've heard it's equally ridiculous/amazing.

The Sword Of Alexander (aka Taitei no ken) is funny as hell, fairly recent.

Watch some of the classics like Seven Samuri & Yojimbo

Shutter is good There's one about a hotel too but can't remeber what it was called. Was in the After Dark festival a couple of years ago though.

On the Other Quirky list how about Delicatessen ?

Same director as the Amelie but without the vile slushiness.

Another one for the "other quirky foreign" pile: [url=

v Tumane

It's a Russian animation from 1975, very basic, but hauntingly beautiful. I just wish I could find a non-YouTube, high quality version of it.
