i'm looking for a new router, 1/2" ideally. main use is for cutting sheet plywood (generally 4-20mm), and will mainly be mounted in a router table.

around 100quid would be good, poss 150. more semi pro than diy.

suggestions for a cracking older used one to look for or a refurbished model would be good as well.

also advice on router bits welcome, generally i cut using templates.

I teach furniture in a college and we get on well with the Dewalt DW625EK ones, though I suspect they may be out of your budget a little at around £250.

At around £100 from Screwfix you have an Erbauer router. Can't comment on the router specifically but I've used their cordless drills which seemed fairly well made, although the batteries didn't maintain top performance for that long.

I've also bought 1/4" routers from Ferm, which were that cheap that I used to just leave them set up for one task such as trimming and they last ages, if not, send it back and get a new one.

Personally though, if doing a lot of heavy work, I'd spend a bit more money.

As for router bits. We've bought several from Wealdon tools. The ones with the replaceable cutters are great. If it's mainly template work you are doing, then the large, two-bladed cutter with a follow-bearing top and bottom is great. It's our workhorse at the college and easy to replace the double-sided cutters when they become dull.

For mounting in a table Triton are very well regarded. If that's all you're going to do with it, just but the biggest most powerful you can get, 2000w+.

I've got the big dewalt mentioned above, it's a 30 year old Elu design and had hardly changed in that time for good reason. You can sometimes pick them up on eBay and Elu ones too. The Tend T10 and T11 are also the same router but with a different base

As FunkyMonkey and others have advised the Dewalt ones are good and based on the old Elu design. I would avoid eBay secondhand Dewalt unless it's had very light use as they tend to have been used and abused heavily by professional tradespeople. If you can get an old Elu then again if it's been used lightly it would make a good choice, but they tend to be sought after and prices can be quite high.

Trend are expensive and will be out of your budget(not quite as pricey as a Festool one) but for what you want the Dewalt, Elu or as FunkyMonkey says the Triton TRA001 is ideal for router table use. The good thing about the Triton is you can adjust it from above the table rather than having to fiddle underneath the table.
