It's not an Emergency if the wound has healed, not sure why you need a receptionist to work that one out for you.

Your problem is not understanding the role of a receptionist in a doctors surgery.
Maybe work that out first before you decide who should be allowed to do it.

You asked a receptionist for medical advice (i.e. go to A&E, wait for doc etc). You are upset that they followed their training and failed to provide it to you. There is a noble tradition of busy body doctor's receptionists dishing all sorts, but they're not meant to.

My mum was a practice manager up until she retired. The bain of her life was idiot receptionists dishing out medical advice, not looking after confidential info (as in shouting out across the waiting room "Syphilis clinic now in room 3, I repeat..." or gossiping about Mrs Miggins ), not turning up or conducting physcological warfare against other receptionists.

I'm going out on a limb here but if the lady you describe is able to function as a doctor's reception she must be able to be responsible for sensitive information, turn up every day and take appointments and sort files. So despite any disability you may perceive she is highly function, probably more so than a good chunk of the population.

you don't need to be a nurse or doctor to understand the how the health system works. the receptionists at my dentist are super knowledgable about the bureaucracy side for example. which is not that complex until it goes wrong, which it does often.

finally, it doesn't seem that appropriate to equate my bad spelling, or perceived stupidity for having a somethign lodged in my finger, or allegedly not understanding the difference between a receptionist and a doctor, with learnign difficulties.

Receptionist sounds brilliant, I'm fairly sure the job of the receptionists here is to stop anyone ever getting an appointment, with detailed interrogation of the exact reason for your wanting one and a multi-stage interview process required!

for the record, i wasn't meaning to criticise the receptionist, but maybe the medical practice.
i wasn't expecting medical advice from her, but i did want to ask someone from the health system what route to follow, and hoped that by going to my doctors surgery i might be able to.

this morning i went back and booked an appointment with a doctor.

Got a lot of time for GP receptionists, people honk about them but imagine spending your working life dealing with folks demanding a doctor (and they do demand) for little Tiffany's cough or their piles issue or those meds you need NOW! when you know there are, say, six people in front of you significantly more likely to die from their affliction than you.

Even so the original point raises a possible issue in that if she is doing a job that is at the edge or above her abilities, and therefore the clientele are getting 'tetchy' - this could create an environment that is not very nice for her to work in.

My ex had a couple of jobs interacting with the public, and sometimes it can be very testing when you combine their self-entitlement and frustration levels - especially when you have to remain calm and just accept it.

Just saying that her employer should keep an eye on the situation to make sure it is not becoming problematic and if so how to make it better - things like checklists to follow for different situations so she doesn't have to get flustered by not remembering how to do stuff whilst an angry client is presuring her, or putting signs up reminding clients that abuse will not be tolerated, etc.

Or just send her to the UK doctors receptionist training where the goal is to be as rude and unhelpful as possible.
