We had an incident where there was criminal damage to a neighbours property. I wont go into details in public here.

The Police were called on 999, two cars came and one of the vehicles was an armed response car/suv. This one left after a bit and I understand they stopped someone nearby but could not detain them.

What esculates them to deploy two cars, should one do? was it what was available in the area etc.

All thoughts welcome.

They may have intelligence on some of the inhabitants?

Armed response are just normal officers who happen to carry guns, so they'll get deployed if they're available. Multiple cars deployed because they were available and 1 can take take statements, the other can perform an area search

Could have been the nearest unit at the time of the call.

Supporting their colleagues and relieved once additional resources arrived on scene.

Factors determining a police response are the info obtained on the initial call and what the police already know about that phone number, address and any associated names.

The police dispatcher then has to balance that need with all the other needs in the area and the resource available to determine what is sent to you.

Are the inhabitants registered gun owners? Or do they have a history of firearms offences?

Most likely answer. Nearest response.

The only response I expect.

The residents are cleaner than clean. The sound was similar to gunfire, I honestly thought someone had been shot, ie the a nasty neighbour. I was the first 999 call, then others were made after so my number got pushed own the list, so when I followed up they had to search.

Now I’m confused - did you phone the police saying you thought someone had been shot? If so then I’d say there’s your answer as to why an armed response unit was sent...

Yeah maybe that was one detail you should have mentioned, calling the police saying you thought you hard gunfire would probably do it.

Dispatch will propose a call and any number of units can respond. I'm an armed officer and will still go if nearby. Like it's been said above, we are just coppers that happen to carry a gun as well
