I'm currently using a mix of visio and graph paper. Is there an app, ideally free as this is a one off, I could use to better sketch out various designs?

Ideally I'd like to draw the existing plan and be to overlay the new plan to show the differences, as alot of the garden isn't going to change.

(in an ideal world I'd use a garden design, and I've looked at that option but we have a small budget and a good 25% would go just on a designer...)

at this stage I'm 90% concerned about the hardlandscaping - planting, is a secondary concern.

As luck would have it, I've just released a simple gardening app! Unfortunately, I didn't include a garden planning feature (I almost did!), so it won't be of any use to your whatsoever. My app focuses on tracking the growth and any subsequent harvests from your plants. Perhaps you could use it once you have your new garden?

Here it is - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/veglog/id6444013681 - all feedback welcome.

I used graph paper when I first designed ours to get the hard landscaping done as it was quicker, easier and more accurate than anything I could find on line. Draw the current layout on graph paper, tape a few sheets of tracing paper (greaseproof kitchen paper worked for me) and then use the different sheets for different parts of the design or different design ideas.

Based graph paper has all the 'hard points' such as fences and paths and steps you cannot/will not be moving.
First transparency layer shows the big structural changes such as new walls, paths and flowerbeds. You might have two or three you can swap to see different ideas.
Second transparency layer has the bigger components like a pond, trees or hedges
Third transparency shows planting ideas for the flowerbeds.

You can then just look at the appropriate layer when buying the bricks and other materials for the walls and paths, a different layer when buying trees or pond stuff, a different layer when buying plants from the nursery. Also means you don't have to redraw everything because you decide to change where a tree is planted.

Tracing paper sounds like a good plan, like the idea of the separate overlays too, kind of what I was looking to do with an online tool. Analogue it is đŸ™‚

Thanks for the link to a planeting planner, that’ll be the next step once I work out where the flowerbeds will going!

No problem at all. I've only just released the app and don't have many users yet, so if you do use it and find it useful then any feedback would be greatly appreciated. There is a feedback button on the settings page in the app.
