I needed some new shaving soap so bought a random selection the other week - one of them was this. It's just really nice! Nice tin, nice smell and you need bugger-all to get a good lather...

I bought a pack of dried figs that were left over from the Christmas stock that the local supermarket had in. A lot of figs and only 20kr. I love figs, but they are expensive here, so this was a major success for me.

Sadly, they are all gone now.

If you strip out the costs of all the overblown marketing/technical guff and sponsored rider w@nkery, you can get comfy-handed loveliness for £4.99:

Sensus emj grips. Very comfy.

£20 grips do not count as 'cheap'. And you know when I said about the overblown marketing/technical guff and sponsored rider w@nkery? Well, I quote:

Hand Crafted in California

After 2 years of testing and development, we couldn’t be more proud to introduce our latest rider signature grip: The Em.J. We worked closely with Emil Johansson to create his dream grip with a focus on durability, comfort and function. The name pays homage to the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. MJ’s talent and progressive mindset continues to inspire people from all walks of life to this day. Although “Em J” started as a fun nickname for Emil, it quickly became a meaningful resemblance. Emil’s unique take on competing has made him an outlier in a field of remarkable athletes and the clear leader for the future of Slopestyle. We are ecstatic to support him throughout his coming decades of dominance.

To start, the grip needed to be comfortable enough to ride all day, while still maintaining the support required to stomp heavy landings. Watching Emil ride for hours on end, day after day, we knew we had our work cut out. After multiple iterations, we achieved this feel through inverting our Crush pattern found on our beloved Swayze. The tighter gaps and thicker waves create a denser feel in the hand while keeping the rubber extra soft for small bump damping.
Since we believe every rider’s cockpit should be custom to them, we’ve added some dual purpose cut lines on the exterior of the grip. Riders can easily shorten their grips to match their riding style and hand placement. When left at full length, the stripes provide extra cushion for bar spins and large impacts. This makes the Em.J an ideal grip for Dirt Jumpers or Freeriders, while also providing plush support for DH riding. When trimmed to the shortest length, the Em.J then becomes our lightest grip. This is ideal for an XC rider looking to save weight and reduce small bump vibrations. They will not only outlast a foam grip through rider wear, but also withstand crashing impacts. For riders wanting an outer flange, the Em-J can easily be flipped to accommodate.

Even though these grips were born in Slopestyle, they have blown us away when applied to other disciplines of riding, such as Enduro/ All Mountain Riding. The slightly larger 32mm diameter has been the Goldilocks for our non Meaty Pawed riders. An increase in diameter coupled with the lack of inner plastic sleeve found in Lock-On’s, makes for a softer ride on the hands. We’ve found the increased rubber between your palms and the bar is unparalleled when spending hours in the saddle. The EM.J’s have quickly become a team rider favorite for all bikes and disciplines.

We took this opportunity to update our End Plugs as well. We started by doubling the width for added impact strength. We also added a chamfered edge to reduce their likelihood of catching on a rider while chucking the bars. These updates once again proved to be useful beyond the skatepark and Slopestyle course. They deflect trees much better than the OG plugs and increase in-hand comfort as the grip wears.

To combat the classic single-ply issue of rotation on the bar, we have reduced the inner diameter. This allows for a tighter fit that combats rotational torque. If you’ve seen how many bar spins Emil throws, and the long hours he spends on his bike every day, you know these grips have been put to the ultimate test!

In addition, we are also proud to announce that this is our most eco-friendly grip yet. While our entire line of grips are produced in America to reduce our transportation footprint, the Em.J’s take it one step further. They feature a 100% recycled packaging hanger and responsibly sourced header card. These are just some of our first steps as we push for a greener future for Sensus and the entire MTB industry.

€12 when I brought them.

Doesn’t make them less comfy. Sounds to me like you’re letting the marketing material affect you rather than judging a product on its merits 😉

A cottage pie from Co-op that was almost out of date for 69p. Nearly as good as the 'Truly Irresistible' Fish Pie I got in similar circumstances a couple of weeks ago - down from almost £5 to 89p IIRC.

Cheap carbon wheels for my road bike. Ok so I know it's an oxymoron, but relative to carbon wheels generally they were very cheap, and the comfort is sublime. I had no idea carbon wheels would be comfier than alloy.

There was a recent PSA for Regatta soft shell walking trousers from Matalan for £14. Absolute bargain, warm and really comfortable and perfect for the recent cold weather.
Edit, just had a look and they still have them, 36”+38” is all that’s left, regatta fenton.

+1 for Aldi Douro, though we've found it a a bit variable over the last couple of years.

Which reminds me, I bought a bottle of Bordeaux they were flogging off for 3 quid before Christmas. Thought if it was awful we could mull it. Opened it the other day. Surprisingly nice (partner agreed, and I waited til after her verdict to tell her how much it cost). Wish I'd bought half a dozen.

A rescue dog.

Not actually that cheap* and it has a taste for expensive poisonous food.

But **** me the pound to pure joy ratio is off the scale.

*But a lot cheaper than a fancy one.

I managed to get a second battery for our house solar array for almost 70% less than the next nearest online price. Compared to its peers, it’s cheap, but next to a fish pie - it’s bloody expensive!

Shimano Deore 11 speed gear set for £116 off ebay. Chain and cassette is Shimano too and not a Suntour swap.  Was a bit concerned about it being counterfeit at that price, but just watched a YouTube video on how to check the chain,  its definitely kosher.  Only thing missing is a quick link.

Again this is likely good value and not necessary cheap.

I bought this for the wife as an Xmas present for £4

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004137162712.html

Game changer

It's a magnetic fridge pen holder,
Atm. It's got holding ball point a marker and 2 pairs of scissors

I'm not saying it's changed my life but I reckon we save 20 minutes a week hunting for a pen/scissors

Assuming we live for another 40 years, that's a leap Februarys worth of time my wife & I have saved for more fulfilling things

A return train ticket to Nottingham - they've put a couple of extra trains on making it viable for work now.

£9.30 for parking and a return ticket, similar to driving and parking. But 30 mins door to desk and vice versa. Driving is 45 minutes in and 90 minutes home.

Build it and they will come.

Depends on what you call cheap, but I bought a "Tiny Pump" from evil Amazon, their version of the Therm-a-rest inflator, because I didn't want to fill my sleeping mat with moisture from my breath and it's pretty hard filling the inflation sack when there's no wind. And it's really really good. And really tiny.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a 4k LG Blu-ray player from Facebook selling, looked like it has never been used. £40.  The aftermarket 4k compatible HDMI cable it came with probably almost cost that.

As far as normal things you can buy everyday, I always think these are an absolute steal at around £10!

Neighbour was throwing out a non working Dyson V8 on our local WA group. I offered to change the battery at cost and someone else suggested cleaning out the filters. They declined. I now have a mint condition V8 fully working after spending £42 on a new battery and set of filters.

It stank of dog, so I did have to give it a good clean to get rid of the smell...

Opinel have always been great value for money.

Bought a ten litre box of Bordeaux Superieur in a French supermarket. Worked out at under €2/litre. It's really rather quaffable and no hangover to speak of.

Pixel 6 from Carphone Warehouse. £299 sim free, then £100 off for old Samsung phone and £35 cashback. £164 all in and a great upgrade over my old phone.
At the other of the spectrum, went into Bath for an impromptu pre-return-to-Uni lunch with the daughter. Was chilly so decided I needed a scarf. Primark insulated scarf purchased, £5 on label, only £3 charged at the till. Been wearing it for dog walking ever since, it's ace. Also quite like the "wearing a sleeping bag around your neck" look...fun and functional!
