I'm thinking of getting my wife a kindle and seem really surprised to read about people using lights to read them at night. Is the screen not bright enough to use on its own? Does the kindle paperwhite work ok without a light? Seems madness!
Thanks
Sorry...wrong forum!
The original Kindle has no backlight whatsoever - that's how the battery lasts so long.
as above, no becklight at all on the original. the kindle screens are not like laptop LCDs, they are more like old LCD watch screens. They benefit from using technology that only needs power to change the display so they could stay on one page forever with no power at all. You can use a little led light on the older ones or get the new paperwhite one that has a very clever front lighting system not a backlight that you get with normal screens.
Of course you could just use a bedside lamp.
I use the kindle cover with the light which runs off the device and it has minimal effect on the battery.
I have the original Kindle and amazon case. I'd get the new backlit one. The case works well and is powered by kindle battery but expensive for what it is.
Thanks. Just what I need to know.
As others have said.
The original (1, 2, 3, 4) Kindles aren't lit, at all. You can no more read them at night than a regular book. Illuminated cases are available for a huge premium, or a regular booklight will also work.
The new Paperwhite is backlit, and thus doesn't an external light source.
The non-backlit kindle displays are made from cells of actual ink that can be electronically sucked to the front of the screen and hence show up as black.
That's why they call it e-ink or e-paper.
no, the reason the battery life is so long is the e-ink screen. bought my Paperwhite 3 weeks ago, haven't needed to charge it yet. As stated above, it isn't actually a backlight anyway so better for the eyes IMOThe original Kindle has no backlight whatsoever - that's how the battery lasts so long.
