Watched "X-Men First Class" on Tuesday - enjoyed it again (saw it in the cinema originally). Worth a watch if you're into that sort of film.

Still probably going to watch the sequel tonight though...

Killer elite, thought it would be a basic action flick but absolutely cracking, great cast with steatham, de Niro and Clive Owen. At least an 8/10

flight from jfk you two? i passed on capt. amaerica and chose kramer vs kramer, very very good. also saw bridesmaids and senna on the way out, both superb too.

i want to see this moneyball film is it out yet? kinda dorky subject but i think brad pitt is actually a good actor.

Pearl Jam 20, saw it a few weeks ago but it was on BBC4 tonight (repeated again at 1:55 if anyones interested) I gave it a solid Ten (ho ho) but probably a biased opinion

Machine Gun Preacher... Really surprisingly good, manages to avoid most of the obvious pitfalls for a film like that. Not all, though. Still, there was a very big chance it'd suck, and it didn't, so hurrah.

Watched Source Code last night and it was really quite enjoyable despite he fact that it sort of shouldn't have been because the central plot theme is pretty outrageous

The boy in the striped pyjamas - not a lot happens but it does built very well to the inevitable ending which I thought was all done very well - subtle but shocking none the less. 8/10 but a bit depressing.

Despicable Me - good plot and the characters were lovingly crafted with a depth and sensitivity that sold the subtext in a manner which was gentle and sublime..
the cinematography let it down however.. and for this reason I am only able to give it a 7/10

Horton Hears a Who looks like it may provide a more rounded experience.. I shall report back later..

got a "10 free rentals" offer from Blockbuster as one of our nearest branches has closed down & they seem to think I'm a good customer.

Been today on mrs_drummer's instructions and we now have 4 nights to watch the following (all her choices):
Salt
Inception
Thor
Middle Men

Can't say I'm looking forward to Inception; the others should be harmless though

The Fountain - 9/10.

Fantastic to finally see a film by Aronofsky that doesn't make you want to curl up and hide somewhere. One of my favourite films of all time I think.

Into The Wild - 5/10.

Feels a bit harsh, but my initial reaction was boring, boring, boring, dull, dull, dull. After thinking about it for a while I've kinda come to appreciate the beauty in the film, and almost watched it again. Might have if it wasn't so boring. Also enough with the mummy/daddy issues, dear god.

Oh also Contagion - 5/10.

People cough, then they die. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't entertained either. Did pretty much nothing for me.

Submarine - had higher hopes than it warranted, 5/10. Amusing in places, but hardly hillarious as is suggests from the reviews on the cover. But maybe I just didn't 'get' it.

seven days in january,bardem.1977.
Weak, makes an interesting story quite boring.
conventional.bit rhetoric.6.5 at the most.
had expected better from the director of the best spanish film I've ever seen.death of a cyclist.1955.8/10.
so,shame.try to give spanish films a chance, living here and all.but they just don't compare to the big players, france,us,italy, japan, russia,uk,germany.
buñuel excepted, but he worked in mexico mostly.

here's the link, excellent, if anyone ever has the chance:

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark 2/10

Utterly, utterly predicable. I should have realised when it said 'presented by Guillermo del Toro'. I would go in to a Kermodian rant about how poor it was, but don't the energy.

Four Lions: four lions out of five. Pushed some boundaries, thought-provoking, but felt like it pulled some punches.
Paul: it's not Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, so one can only conclude that Edgar Wright is the funny one out of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

I didn't like Four Lions as it was too contrived to take me in.

Watched Dog Day Afternoon at the weekend, which I havent seen since the 70's. Good film 7.5/10. The young lad Pacino is brilliant, he'll go far.

I am finding that re-visiting old movies can often be disappointing.

the station agent was good.

watched some bmx films today.

up up and away-sunday.nice music, some stuff filmed here in bcn so I can have a look at the spots and mince around.nice music.7.sick riding.

synopsys-micreation.bit mellow/empty.didn't actually notice any music.5.good riding.

oss football.nice vibe, great music, just positive.7.5.I think that was filmed here in bcn too.but then again, they do all resemble each other a bit.

bmx films have better music than mtb films,to my ears.
plus it's nice to see the lads happy at getting something right,or throwing hissy fits when they don't.you don't really get any of that with full facers.but then again, riding with just a beanie seems mental to me.

Dead Snow. 4/10. I knew it would be shite but I didn't realise it would be that bad. But it gets points for the Ein Zwei Die tagline, hanging off the cliff via zombie intestines, and the people getting ripped in half.

For some reason I just watched Captain America.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458339/

An absolute fantastic display of a hollywood cliche. Super dull, must've taken real skill to put Hugo Weaving and Tommy Lee Jones in a film and still have me wondering how much more I'd have to endure.

3/10.

Went to watch the improbably named Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol today.

It's MI done by JJ Abrams, which should tell you all you need to know. It's bloody tremendous, go see it.

Something high out of ten or five or some such, I don't do ratings.

I just finished Batman Begins, which I somehow missed when it came out. Pretty good... Something I'm always banging on about is that the best CGI in the world always looks crap after a year or two, but modelwork doesn't date. And here's a nice modern film without too much CGI, to prove me right.

Good plot, good performances... A little bit of absolute ridiculousness but then, it's a comic.

I have just endured Mr Poppers Penguins, it was the 'family'(wife's) Christmas movie of choice this year, in the spirit of the evening I shall give it a 5, would I watch it again? Nope.
Still this was the wind down to the afternoons entertainment of the Christmas panto at MK, less said about that the better 😉

Happy Xmas one & all.

In the last week have watched:

Four Lions - odd, dark, tragic but funny.
Due Date - run-of-the-mill comedy gumf in the line of The Hangover but without the OTT shock factor. Forgettable, switch-your-brain-off comedy, good for a laugh.
The Adjustment Bureau - Inception lite. Interesting concept though, worth a watch.
Buried - excellent film, massive step up by Ryan Reynolds. Can't say too much about why it was so good without giving away plot spoilers, but an excellent film.
Black Swan - Got this as the sixth in a 6 for $16 deal at the local DVD shop as a token chick flick for the wife, having got the four films above and one other I can't even remember, such was its impact on me. Anyway, WOW! Totally blown away by this, it's a seriously powerful film. Best I've seen in ages, really really dark but enthralling. Never would have thought I'd like it but this is the first film in years that has emotionally moved me. Highly recommended.
