You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm away with work for a month or so and apparently there is damp at home, our lass advised me yesterday. Window sill at the top of the stairs. I'm not particularly DIY minded - I'd rather be out playing on my bike - how bad does this look and how do I sort it out when I get home??
Help o' wise DIY-types...

That's not bad! Is it just coming from round the window frame? Need to try and trace the source but it might just be water getting blown in round the frame which needs to be re sealed.
Looks like the sort of job I might consider doing something about in 10yrs time! 🙂
But I'd check the sealant around the window frames first to see if it's dried up and cracked.
id rate it 2/10
its more than likely just the cold wall round the window. Not a lot you can do.
For one awful moment whilst scanning the threads I read the title as 'rate my dump'! Esoteric even by STW standards....

I've got a similar issue, though the water's slowly leaking in from the bottom corner angle on a fixed middle pane.
Rightly or wrongly, I intend to buy some of this silicone and bead it on the outside where the glass and frame meet.
Using my rainbow scale of damp, i'd say yellow, maybe and ill-tempered mustard.
if its just damp coming through the wall, rather than condensation i would sand it back to plaster then give it two coats of Coo-Var Anti Damp paint then over paint it with emulsion.
We have a wall - 1906 Victorian rendered house - which has a light fur that appears every 2-3 years about this time. it doesn't feel damp although I suspect the brickwork behind is as its North West facing an takes the brunt of heavy rains. I suspect with the heating coming on the temp differential encourages it It it lined with wallpaper so the glue probably contribute to the fur.
We clean the inside with mould killer to remove the fur, and are soon to redecorate so undoubtably will re move the appear so see if the plaster is badly affected with penetrating damp, I hope not.
...also make sure that the plastic frame drains are clear.
Rate my damp…
2/10 from ingress around window frame likely, unless it is a really damp room and that is lots of condensation on a poorly insulated reveal.
Hmmm, better than expected! Thanks for all the replies.
Its in the hall / landing so not a damp space really.
Not sure whats happened to the photo...
Will get some Coo-Var and have a close look at the window.
Cheers all!

Reposting image - I hadn't signed up to ImgBB so don't think it saved picture. Hopefully rectified for posterity!
I'd say that's possibly more condensation than anything.
Any trickle vents on the window?

No, not on this one. Only the ones in the kitchen and bathroom.
I would do a careful inspection of where the window frame meets the wall on the outside, all the way around. Wind might be helping the rain get in.
And definitely hold off painting until you're sure the problem has been fixed and it's had a chance to dry out completely. You can ride your bike while you're waiting for it to dry.
