So do they? I've got a crazy idea that old climbing holds could be used as an MTB coaching aid. Wondering if they wear out so might be available for low or zero cost.
Yes, absolutely. They eventually lose their texture and go smooth. Lots of climbing centres sell off old holds when they're done with them.
Excellent, lack of texture wouldn't be that big an issue with what I have in mind.
Even better when they get smooth. You want big or small ones?
I'm intrigued...can you tell us the idea?
I coach kids with the local cycling club. Our venue has plenty of banks, grass and a handy bike park but what it lacks is rocks. My thought is that climbing holds could provide a movable, and adaptable rock like surface. I wondering about having small pre attached layouts on backing boards, looser combinations scattered in an area and possibly even temporarily fixing larger fittings on banks.
That could work with the right holds. Don't underestimate how heavy they are, they're usually sold and probably not far off the weight of actual rock!
Spike on the back to knock into grass/ground?
Spike on the back to knock into grass/ground?
Yes something along those lines.Â
I perhaps incorrectly assumed the larger ones might be hollow or at least scalloped at the back.
Sounds like it might be worth exploring further then. There are a few climbing places locally I can go and talk to.
