Bit of a random one but we have a external vent in our bathroom and i'm wanting to fill it. Reason being is we never turn it on and it lets in a load of cold and noise in from the neighbours - dogs barking etc.

I don't really want to go down the permanent route of blocking with bricks... so i'm looking for something that can be put in temporarily that will block out some noise and can be easily reversed in case we want to move.

I can't think of anything other than maybe some old towels - anyone else done this?

Cheers

One of these? You can close them off.

Expanding foam, you can then just cut it out with a long hacksaw blade when you want to hear the noises again.

Expanding foam

even better - if there's a pipe in there that the vented air runs through you could just change the pipe and the foam would come with it.

We block ours with a slab of packing foam. It's like slightly tougher, more flexible polystyrene that I've cut to a squash fit. Tend to block it in winter and unblock in summer. We have a separate ducted vent for actual ventilation. Don't think I'd block it otherwise. Works well at reducing cold air coming in. Does reduce notice too

Vents are usually there for reason. Do you have a gas boiler in there? How do you extract the damp air to help reduce condensation, black mould etc?

The broken kitchen and bathroom extractor fans in our rented house just have plastic bags stuffed in them. We just open the windows after showers or if boiling veg.

A towel might go mouldy and manky, the plastic bags seem fine.
