Am I the only one to irrationally, but quite vehemently, dislike another European country?

Because Portugal does my head in. I mean, what have they given the rest of us other than a ridiculous legal system? No gespacho; no Ouzo; no pizza; no pastries; no particular beer; no scholarship; no decent music...the list could go on.

Keep Lisbon for the history I say, but cut the rest off of the Iberian Peninsula and set it adrift in the Atlantic.

So come on. What country do you think kind of sucks?

I've always disliked England. Well, not England, just the English. And not the ones that I've met who I liked, just the vocal majority.

I have a reputation at work, which I uphold for lazy comedy effect, for hating Norwegians. But I love everyone really. Except the bloody English.

I don't like Nigeria either, but that's only because some Nigerians keep promising to deposit money in my bank, and they never come through. Except it's not in Europe.

But what on earth is wrong with Ireland? I thought everyone liked Ireland?

Nigeria, Somalia, Afghanistan for starters. I could go on but then I'd start to look like a certain figure in history who believed in the ubermensch.

I spend a bit of time in Portugal so I'd disagree about that. They gave the world tea, coffee, Eusebio, vindaloo (its a corruption of the Portuguese for vinegar and garlic. However, the legal system is a 'mare but not as bad as the impenetrable language they speak. The people are pretty ****less more or less. I like it all the same.

Ireland, however... I dislike. Intensely.

Portugal are our oldest allies in Europe and there's a long history of Anglo-Portuguese families running the port trade.

Great surfing too, just steer clear of the Algarve.

Had a bad experince in Belgium when I was a kid. Some bearded 50 year old Belgian guy hit my 14 year old brother over the head with a pool cue in a dispute over who was playing next on a pool table in a youth hostel! Also had a nightmare when we drove down a one way road to have a picnic and came back to find they had dug the road up and we were blocked in. Ended up having to take some fence posts out!

That and the whole Mark Dutroux thing have put me right off. I liked the look of Bruges in In Bruges though, and they do make great beer. 🙂

Italy. I can't stand all the Italians in Italy.

Although bizarrely, every Italian I've ever known I've liked. It seems that they're fine when they're not in Italy, but complete arseholes when they're at home.

I'm an eighth Italian btw, so can't be accused of racism.

I like them less when they're in London. On the occasions I've ventured to the Smoke, Italians always seem to be in the way, gathering at the bottom of a set of steps. Maybe it's a national trait - is that something you'd do for an eighth of your time when in the capital?

I used to hate the French till I went to Italy. No idea of how to queue.
At what age do all those gorgeous Italian women turn into those haggard old crows? Lust in haste, regret at leisure.
Have always had a love of Australians though for no apparent reason. Oh and listening to softly spoken women from eire.

I used to think that about Austria. Hitler. Falco. Arnie. Fritzl. The cheating bastards of Rapid Vienna (c) 1983. Then I went there on a last-minute cheap ski holiday. Loved it. Have been twice since and had a great time, found the people to be brand new. Life's too short to dismiss swathes of the globe on the basis of irrational prejudices.

Having said that, I'm in no hurry to go on holiday to anywhere whose name ends in -stan.

I like portugal. I went there for the euro champs and had a lovely time. There was this one very nice Portugese lady who told me that the reason their economy is rubbish is that as soon as the summer starts, everyone quits their job, signs on and heads to the beach. Nice.

Portugal only stood up to Bonaparte because a British Amry under General Sir John Moore had been sent to protect British trade interests there.
The British army suffred several runnung defeats and had to fight a terrible withdrawal through the mountains, the French only ever a few hundred metres behind until they came to Corruna where they turned and defeated the French. General Sir John Moore died in the battle but it gave Portugal enough space to regroup and heart enough to continue the fight.

But yeah, the Welsh..

what have they given the rest of us

wasn't Columbus Portuguese?

Also isn't Brazil a Portuguese speaking country

In the 15th and 16th centuries, as the result of pioneering the Age of Discovery, Portugal expanded western influence and established a global empire that included possessions in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America, becoming the world's major economic, political and military global power. The Portuguese Empire was the first global empire in history,[10] and also the longest lived of the European colonial empires, spanning almost 600 years, from the capture ofCeuta in 1415, to the handover of Macau to China in 1999. However, the country's international status was greatly reduced during the 19th century, especially following the Independence of Brazil, its largest colony in its history.

Yeah what on earth has Portugal ever done?

Personally I'm not fond of India as a place. Its dirty, in a way that scares the crap out of domestos, I hate the class divides, and the way that the society clings to religion to maintain the status quo really squeezes my pipes. However, there are many notably great things to come out of it and I'd be the first to acknowledge that, but I'm not going to be going there again from choice, ever!

Everything is damn expensive because the £ is worth jack compared to 5-10 years ago.

A lot of people seem to have a very sketchy understanding of what constitutes Europe. But anyway... muddydwarf- we are going on holiday to Spain near the Picos de Europa and I am hoping to nip down to La Coruna (Corunna) to see where Moore was buried.
Also for the anti - Portugal brigade the Caldera de Guerras is bloody fantastic, some great mountain biking to be had.

I have been to ****stan. I have also been to Afghanistan, which, along the borders is really the same place. The locals don't think of themsleves as one or the other, their allegiance is tribal.
I can assure you that "Violent, paranoid, corrupt, nucleur armed and very very religious" doesn't even come close to describing the place or the people, or their way of thinking.

The news of the region that we read here, even in the Daily Mail has been watered down and sanitized so as not to offend our Western sensibilities.

Thanks for upping the average

Although some terrible things were done in the name of the British empire it was pretty benign compared to many others.

That’s like being a pretty benign murderer and exploiter isn’t it 😕

Re. the slave trade the British through the auspices of the Royal Navy were instrumental in ending it

As for slavery we were both instrumental in its existence and in its ending. The later can never be called good given the former. It is like me stopping kicking you and thinking I have done a good thing by stopping.

PS Portugal started it ..just syaing like I have nothing against Portugal
